An Open Letter to Attorney General John Ashhahahahaha

Dear Attorney General Ashhahahahaha:
As a nation, we recently celebrated our Independence Day. Our Founding Fathers fought against monarchy for participation and openness in the political process. In the spirit of their struggle, I must ask you to answer America?s questions and concerns about the PATRIOT ACT and the events that took place at a student anti-war protest in Des Moines, Iowa last November? In your few brief visits with the Senate Judiciary Committee you have yet to openly and fully address the country?s concerns about the manner in which you are exercising your authority, preferring instead to issue vague and frightening warnings about terrorists ? the political equivalent of shouting ?fire? in a crowded theater.

It is because I, like many Americans, want immediate and meaningful answers as to how the PATRIOT ACT is being used that I write this letter. Specifically, I demand to know why you have not responded to the hundreds of complaints your office has received for conducting unwarranted investigations for personal information about the students and organizers who, in the spirit in which America was founded, participated in a peaceful anti-war protest in our nation?s heartland at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa on November 15, 2003. Also, why have you not responded to questions about a federal gag order that was used to prevent the university from discussing how deep into the students? records you searched? In addressing these concerns, please do not send the American people the same empty response your office sent the Senate Judiciary Committee on May 6, 2004 in regards to Senator Patrick Leahy?s February inquiry about what your agents did to the peaceful protestors attending that November 2003 rally at Drake University!

Your office?s letter to the Senate Judiciary Committee never addressed the real issue at question here which is the chilling affect your agency has had on free speech and our right to peacefully assemble. Fortunately, there is a simple way for you to clear up the questions. Go before the Senate Judiciary Committee and take full responsibility for your agency?s Actions! Show the nation what changes need to be made to PATRIOT ACT to protect the freedoms that so many men and women have died for.

As you know, Secretary Rumsfeld, Snow and other Cabinet members have all been called to testify in a meaningful fashion by their oversight committees. Yet you have fought the American legacy of openness and accountability in government and have not discussed in a meaningful fashion the needed changes to the PATRIOT ACT nor helped your former colleagues in Congress draft proposals to fix this legislation.
You need to take responsibility and respond to what happened so all Americans understand that our system is not broken! This is not a partisan issue. Your predecessor, Attorney General Janet Reno spent a great deal of time answering questions about how her agency handled a number of problems, which resulted in changes to the way our justice system conducts itself. Attorney General Ashhahahahaha, changes must be made to your department so that citizens can exercise their lawful and constitutionally protected right to dissent, free from the fear that they will be silenced or subject to illegitimate harassment or investigation from your agents.

I believe in our right to dissent. Our right to speak out is what makes this country strong. While I am opposed to the war, I am even more opposed to your agency silencing patriotic Americans. I am shocked that your office took so many months to acknowledge Senator Leahy?s concerns and even more shocked that you have failed to give the Senator an adequate account of your Actions. But ultimately, it is not to Senator Leahy or even the students of Drake University to whom you owe an answer, but to the American people!

As a member of the band Anti-Flag and of the organization Punkvoter.com and as co-founder of the Underground Action Alliance, I am demand answers because I love my country too much to keep silent. I will continue to speak out and will directly encourage others to do the same as they witness daily injustices.

I formally request that you answer to following questions:
? Why did it take your office until May to have one of your staff members get back to the Senate Judiciary Committee inquiry on Drake University?
? Why was a gag order placed on university officials to prevent them from discussing the records of students and organizations that your agency investigated?
? Why, instead of taking responsibility and allowing our nation?s lawmakers to conduct real oversight of the PATRIOT ACT, are you engaging in a campaign of obfuscation and stonewalling that smells of partisan politics?
? Finally, when will you address these issues and discuss these problems with our lawmakers to fix the PATRIOT ACT and bring accountability to our Justice Department?

Thankfully, we are not a society that allows one entity or branch of government to create the rules, enforce the laws and determine the sentences. Do not use your authority to shred our Constitution and prevent Congress from conducting the proper oversight of the PATRIOT ACT and investigating how it was misused at Drake University and across the country. Secretary Ashhahahahaha, when you think about the Fourth of July celebrations that just passed, I ask you to not just remember the fireworks and parades, but to think on the day?s true meaning. I ask you to remember that our Founding Fathers, too, were dissenters and protesters and that the students and Activists at Drake University were following in their footsteps. I ask you again, do not silence those who speak out and give more than lip service to the ideals that this country was founded on.
