Not to sound dumb, but I've always wondered what "standby mode" exactly does? does that consume power/electricity, or not?

my monitor switches off after 15 mins, i leave the pc on if im only going to be geone an hour or so, otherwise i hibernate, i never shut down, just hibernate, unless there is some serious memory leak or something, then i reboot, this happens maybe once a monthComment

Actually, either I have really bad luck or you guys are full of shit. My LCD shows a little burn sometimes on the top of the screen from my IE bar. It isn't anything too bad like words or images, but instead I can see the horizontal lines quite often.
