Alcohol laws, Sex laws, and Prostitution laws around the world

In America 21 is the legal drinking age. In Canada 19 is the legal drinking age. And in France and many other parts of Europe 16 is the legal drinking age.

In America prostitution is illegal except for some places in Nevada (God bless em.) In Canada they don't enforce any law against prostitution (speaking of Vancouver B.C.-kiddy strolls). And in many eastern asian countries prostitution is widely encouraged as an entertaining part of culture.

In Amercia the legal age to have sex or doing anything sexual is 18. In many other countries there is no law and some countries they have laws but they're not enforced. Yet in my opinion, out of all the reasons people have for having sex maybe 10% of those reasons have anything to do with "emotional maturity" or just being "mature" at all.

What do you think are the major differences in culture and society around the world that makes one nation of people have such different points of view about these things than others?

Do you think it would be harmful or beneficial for America to adopt or change some of the laws we have to more closely resemble the laws of a more liberal nation?

We will always be stricter than most countries cuz of our puritan background. I can't imagine that changing anytime soon.

Another question, who knows of a country that is more strict about "adult fun"? Alcohol, drugs, sex, etc. Singapore comes to mind. Any others?

No offense Dank, but it sounds like your into kiddie stuff. Why would you want to do those types of activities with someone under 18 anyway?

The reason those countries don't enforce our beliefs is because they don't have a form of government which protects the best intrest of their people as a whole, like we do.

I think it is our beliefs in ethics, and morals which set those age restrictions as a guide to when a person is capable of handling the situations we face while intoxicated or engaging in a sexual act. I also believe that these guides have proved to be true when you look back in our history.

Abuse a child sexually, and they will feel the affects for a lifetime. Serve a minor alcohol, and they will become like Ted Kennedy!

Dank, please reply. Are you advocating doing away with laws that have specific ages for legal sex? Or was it just a question as to whether America would be better off not being so puritan about ADULT stuff. Having to do with adults making decisions about adults doing what they like as long as no one gets hurt.

If it is the former, I would disagree. We need laws and the stricter the better to protect children. If it is the latter, I am a devout Libertarian, adults should be able to do whatever they please as long as no one else is harmed in the process. So I guess to sum up I feel America is to restrictive with grown people being able to do what they like to themselves and other consentual adults....but I get real tough when it comes to the protection of minors.

I agree with your first message about this being a country with puritan backround. So if it's so puritan then why are we allowed to drink at all? Why do they pass out condoms to minors and adults thus promoting sex before marriage if we have such a puritan background? Why are we allowed to buy porno and make porno, for example, if we do have so much Puritan background? I'm not saying that we don't have a puritan background in our country, but looking around you is proof that things are getting looser and easier as far as what's exceptable is concerned. Many people are trying to stop that from happening but it's true nonetheless.

The only law that bothers me more than the illegalization of weed, when alcohol kills, etc. is prostitution being illegal.

It's not something I would choose for myself as an occupation...but...if I did, the government is going to tell me what I can and cannot do with my body? I think not!

As I believe it was Bill Maher who said it best. They let a woman sell her body to house another person's child for nine months but not a cock for 10 mins? (okay, that may not be verbatim LOL).

This falls under the victimless crime category..in the right circumstances. The only thing that makes a prostitute a victim is the gov't, if she is forced by pimps or drug abuse to sell herself, or that she has been put in harms way by getting in cars with potential psychos, or thrown in jail, etc. All things that could be reduced dramatically if it were regulated and controlled like it is in Nevada.

This is the oldest profession in the world, how arrogant of our government to impose any law on their citizens because they deem it immoral themselves.

To reiterate, I am not, necessarily a proponent of prostitution (just like abortion), I am a fierce proponent of the right to choose and not be thrown in jail or have to resort to back alley abortions.

People are going to do it regardless, and I could go on and on, but I'm trying to cut my soap box posts down to a minimum LOL

We are not necessarily a "puritan" society as of late. I just think we've held on to this kind of thinking from 200 years ago, that brings people like Ashcroft on the scene and keeps people from repealing laws that are clearly outdated, etc.

We have come a long way...but, we would have come further without that particular way of thinking being prevalent, yes, even today.

And none of those things you mentioned above, don't get opposed by one "puritan" group or another. Just glad, that they didn't win...this time.

The age to have sex is 14. In Ontario

The age to view and be in porn is 18. Across the board.

Age to drink is 19. (used to be 21, then 18 now 19). In Ontario

I think the drinking age, should be changed to 18 here. It is in some provinces. but ontario it's still 19.

I honestly believe that our society teaches kids and adults to supress sexuality and any kind of sexual expression. Thank goodness that a lot of kids who have discovered their sexuality on their own are rebelling against this.

But of course they are! Why? Because IT'S NATURAL!

No man can tell me honestly that he's never wished that some girl that he saw who looked really hot was 18 when it turned out that she was 15, for example. It happens to every man. Why, because that's in our NATURE!

Laws should be there to protect people from being abused and raped bute there's a huge difference between abuse or rape and having a sexual relationship with someone - no matter what the age is.

My rule of thumb that I've made for myself is that I shouldn't have to beg or plead someone to have sex with me and I shouldn't try to manipulate someone either. But if a person expresses a definite interest then who gives a fuck about age?

What business does the government or anyone else have in telling two consenting people what they can and can't do together?
Do we not own our own bodies and make desicions about what we do with our bodies for ouselves?

Age shouldn't matter as much it currently does.

The reason I made this post is to see if I could open your minds beyond what is the norm in this country.

Many Americans think that because we are such a powerful and influential country our laws are right.

Sex laws in America have nothing to do with wrong or right. It's strictly a cultural issue.

Like this guy here from the Netherlands for example, legal to drink at 18, legal to see prostitutes aat 16.

While many of us would love to see laws like that in America, he says that the laws there in the Netherlands are all fucked up.

It's not it's not wrong or right. It's CULTURE.

What's wrong or right in this world could go a whole nother direction.
But what we don't necessarily do what's right.....most people just do what's law.

And for the record, I'm 27 years old and I'm attracted to girls of many different ages, some older and many younger.

And just because some girls are a certain amount of years younger than me doesn't mean that I'm not attracted to them anymore.

We are forced by law to go against what's natural.
