:tongue Why do companies register typos of their domains but don't use them at all?

I've noticed many companies registering typos of their names but not redirecting them to their sites.

When someone registers a typo they sue him because they say he profits from their name ( traffic )..although it's obvious that when someone makes a typo and it redirects him to a completely different page, he will look again for the site he was originally interested in.

But check out this:

plaboy.com - belongs to Playboy, but isnt redirected to their site
aolmessanger.com - belongs to AOL, but isn't used anyway
googlesearch.com - belongs to Google, but doesnt redirect to their site

All these names get massive type in traffic every day and the companies that own them still dont feel the need to forward these names to their sites. It really amazes me

they let expire the domains and when someone registers the domain again, they sue him again.

If they already own this name they should make use of it and redirect it to Google.com.

Furthermore, ppl are stupid, so someone may type in www.plaboy.com and he gets "page not found" so he may not realise he made a typo, he may think that page is down for some reason, and will type in www.hustler.com instead....

The domains are not only a domain. It´s trademark. If you write www.googlesearch.com and like to search. If you came to a 404, check the domain and then type google.com

We are doing this to at some off our sites.

If they don't want to redirect, they should put at least a message like "You misspeled our name, click here to enter Google.com"

well I can understand them registering the names, makes since so they can control how their sites are marketed.. But would make more since to make a link on the page leading to their main url..

They have the names registered for name protection for sure, but it wouldnt harm them in any way to point those domains to their main domain - and that was my point.

also happens a lot that they don't cover mistyped subdomains like wwww.google.com for example.
