Working from home Rocks (my first time) Question:

I realize I may eventually have to relocate and join the office staff but nothing is better than sitting around half dressed, laying on a couch, listening to loud music and working. Hell, this last week with the impacted tooth infection and tomorrows surgery I wouldn't have been able to make it into an office, this allows me to still get work done. LOVE IT SO FAR!

Who else works from home? What other perks are there to enjoy?

I already know teengodfathers answer: he gets to work naked.

Chemicaleyes, hit me up when you can, I do have some tax questions for you!

It's nice but there are definite costs to it.

Wait unitl you start getting the phone calls from friends and family who think that because you don't have a "real job," you can just stop whatever you're doing and pick it up later.

Wait until you realize that the moment you wake up you're at work until the moment you go to bed...sure it may have been like that before but you at least had the buffer zone of office time and home time.

Wait until you find yourself reading the boards too much, or surfing tv channels and getting caught up on old shows you missed that now come on during the day.

There are definite benefits, but there are also costs...it takes a lot of will power and focus to work while you could be playing and no one is there to keep you in check but yourself.

haha, funny you mention "commute"...evil I up and moved myself so far away from my old job that I dreaded that drive day in and day out. I always worked from morning til night, but I'm learning how to shut the computer off at night. (For the first time in my life). I just have questions about write-offs, etc.

Eros.... I've actually laid off the boards since I started at home... odd.

Thanks for the input and if you have any advice you can give me about the financial stand point (taxes) please hit me up on icq.

PS. You are right evil, having a fully stocked kitchen at your disposal for lunches is much better than McCrap or TacoHell.

I work from home and my computer is in my bedroom. Here are the good and bad things about working at home:

Good: You can work your own hours
Bad: Family and friends love to hang out with you and ask you to do errands

Good: You can work in whatever you want to wear
Bad: When you are in your undies, that's when you family pops in and you have to rush to get your pants on

Good: You can eat and drink in front of the computer
Bad: Those pounds up over the years so be sure to get some exercise

I think if you work for someone else at home it's different then working for yourself. First you can't come and go when you please unless you are looking to get fired.
Also I think the home commuters are the first to get dumped because there is no bond that is built by seeing each other in the office every day. Also in office politics which happens in any office with more than two people , you are out of the loop . Some one doesnt like you its easy for them to do a number on you if you are at home and they are in the office . Also being in the office there is no mystery how much work are they really doing ?
If I lived close enough I would go to the office everyday . We work for ourselves and we are getting a office to go to.

I have to TRY to gain weight... this whole wisdom tooth thing shrunk me down under 100... once I am back on solid foods I am planning on 24/7 binges to get some meat on me.

This is just a huge problem in my life.. even my girlfriend thinks I'm home doing nothing. I've considered lately to hire some office space just to get away from that problem. My girlfriend wanted me to help her brother build a porch next week and my father just called to check if I was ready to paint my grandmothers house the week after. Kind of getting tired of that shit.

Any good advice would actually be HIGHLY appreciated (and I can't say GFY to any of them)

Good Points, but I never would accepted this job over the other generous offers I received if I did not have complete trust in John

I tried it for about 2 months and I went insane at home. I need some kind of social interaction and that's why I got an office. The commute is only 10 minutes each way which keeps it short and I get so much more work done at the office then home now. I still do some work at home but mostly mundane type work. Only downside is I now pay two rents, two security systems, two internet connections, etc. etc... But its worth it to be more productive.

Well, after my large purchase, purchasing an office is out of the question but I can see myself missing that social/structured part of working outside the home. I guess I am in the initial phase of enjoying it. I am finding myself more productive even though I have a TV and all kinds of distractions here. I've been working off my couch since I've been sick but I have a fully segregated dining room turned office and I had NEVER used the dining room before, so sitting in it feels odd.

Give it a month or two. If you're motivated enough to work well, then congrats. I know quite a few people who can do it all from home as well, I just know I'm not one of them. I had to distinguish between the home life and work life and getting an office was the best solution to it.

Need a secretary?

I type, make coffee and look excellent in a skirt and thong and know how to bend over just right to pick up a pencil while putting my finger in my mouth as if to say "oops."

I love working at home.. Today I woke up at noon and didn't get out of bed till 3PM cause I have my laptop next to my bed..

The biggest perk for me is I can pick the hours I work. I'm a night owl that will stay up till after 8AM daily and I get the most productive work done at night when others are sleeping

But at the same time since I sleep a foot away from my laptop I'm always there to answer questions from Affiliates all day long

Kind of getting tired of that shit.

Any good advice would actually be HIGHLY appreciated (and I can't say GFY to any of them)
Yeah I nipped that crap in the butt. I generally don't even answer the phone during the day unless I am waiting on a phone call.

I have no problem telling my family / friends and girlfriend to go fuck themselves when they cross the line though.

if you work for yourself or your a corporation , taxes can be due at different times of the year (quartley ect) or pay at the end. if not taken care of correctly things can be a pain is the ass with the IRS

you need to contact a cpa to do your taxes.

its in your best intrest to do this.

anyone who says otherwise is a moron.

people who are self employeed or own a small biz who do their own taxes with no help from a professional are nuts, cause if you fuck up or are audited all the blame lays on you and your responsible for every damn piece of paper and question ect.

if a cpa does your taxes, theyre responsible, they archive all their work, have experience with audits and know what to expect..

plus theyre in the business of tax write offs ...

I used to work from home but i like going to an office better.

I have my own office which is 2 miles from my house.

it rules.

I have the same "problem" of being a workaholic.

I don't have a Boss kicking me out of the office at 6PM, telling me to get a life.

So if I get caught up in something I look at the clock and it's 4:00 AM and I have to force myself to sleep, messed up sleep schedules etc etc can take a heavy toll if you do not set a daily plan with priorities that include excercise, breaks, social stuff and just getting out of the house for a while. I am also paranoid about that deep vein thrombosis stuff, so I make it a point to get up once an hour and walk around and stretch.

Working from home doesn't "work" for everyone but with discipline and determination most people can make a go of it.
