KRL,

Is it just me or are most people here plain ignorant ?

To all ignorant pricks on this board :

READ THIS and try to memorize it :

IE sucks bigtime, it is NOT safe, and never will be, despite of the 100s of patches, it's just waiting for the next exploit/patch.

Firefox sucks also, it's safer than IE, but not fully compliant and buggy.

OPERA is the best browser on the market.

It's fast, safe, and complete.

Now get off your lazy ass, download and experience it :

The features, security and page loading speed on Opera blow IE away.

I'm ultra picky about software, especially the stuff that can impact my productivity and system security. I wouldn't endorse an app unless I'm totally in love with it. I'm in love with Opera.

Yeh, I'm the same way. I hate changing too. But sometimes you should indeed try some new things when they come along and people are telling you with boundless enthusiasm check it out.

What's $40 these days? A tank of gas? The cost of one dinner?

You can even skin it to look just like IE if that makes you feel more at home.

Well, don't think so.

Spyware is all about ActiveX, Visual Basic Script and JS-script (MS implementation of j-a-v-a-s-c-r-i-p-t).

Opera has none of them.

BTW
I'm a programmer myself, and I can tell you Opera is one of the best coded apps I've seen so far. Highly optimized, and stable.

I don't say it's unvulnerable.

There were exploits for Opera, using the skinning engine.

They take care of that within a day, with an immediate upgrade.

I'm talking about Spyware / Adware and all kinds of worms.

Opera is like teflon compared to IE.

Seems we like to share our love for Opera, Security and Veggie food.

As you like to use the most secure browser, may I suggest the best firewall to you ?

I wonder if Opera is finally compatible with w3 standards.

Last I checked, there was many problems. Mozilla (and Firefox) are much better on that aspect.

7.52 fixed a lot of issues.

The problem is that people still use Frontpage or Xara to design websites, which gives compliance problems.

I did completely handwritten dynamic pages based on java-script.. It worked with IE right off the bat, and required a very minor modification for Mozilla, without even adding any browser sniffing code. For Opera, it was just impossible to get it to work right. At that point I figured it wasnt worth the effort to try to figure out how differently Opera handles the Document Object Model.

This was a few months ago, maybe I'll check it out again sometime

Small size

Opera is less than half the size of most major browsers, yet still boasts a large number of useful and innovative features and functions.

Sessions

Opera lets you save a collection of open pages as a session, allowing for retrieval on later start-ups, or in the middle of another session. Opera can also be set up to start with the pages you had open when the browser was last closed.
Multiple Document Interface

Opera is by default a Multiple Document Interface application, displaying multiple pages in the same application window, allowing you to resize and pose pages next to each other. However, Opera can also be made to work as a Single Document Interface application, a tabbed application, or with a combination of the Multiple and Single Document Interface, running multiple instances and windows at the same time.

Changing clients

Opera can import bookmarks and e-mail messages from the most commonly used applications and formats.

The Wand

Opera's password manager, the Wand, remembers your usernames and passwords so you will not have to. Log in manually once and use the Wand for later visits to a password-protected Web site.
Pop-up blocking

Opera lets the user control whether Web sites can use pop-ups. Select to block them all, or let the browser open only pop-ups that you have requested.

Opera Mail

In Opera's e-mail client, the full text of messages are indexed to allow for speedy searches. There is a built-in spam filter that learns as you add and remove messages. You may also set up custom filters.

Starting with Opera 7.50, you can use Opera Mail to read RSS newsfeeds. Click newsfeed links to subscribe, or use Opera's navigation bar while surfing to automatically recognize embedded newsfeed links and display a "Newsfeed" button.

Opera Mail also handles Usenet newsgroups.

Chat client

You can now use Opera to connect to IRC servers and chat in rooms or privately, send files to other users, and so forth. The chat panel lists previously visited chat rooms and contacts that are on line.

Panels

Opera's has a useful default selection of panels, such as the Mail and Chat panels. The panel selector provides easy access to all your panels, and adding and removing panels is easily done. Most of the panels have a handy 'Quick find' search-as-you-type feature.

Contacts panel

Opera provides simple access to all your e-mail and chat contacts. Each contact also serves as a view of all e-mail correspondence between the contact and yourself.

Bookmarks panel

All bookmarks are displayed and accessible from the bookmark panel. Opera also allows you to assign nicknames to bookmarks to allow quick access to them directly from the address bar.

History panel

Opera remembers what sites you have visited, and the history panel gives you easy access to the most recently visited pages.

Links panel

Get a quick overview of all links and linked file types present on the Web page you are visiting.

Transfers panel

This is Opera's download manager, with quick access to ongoing and recently finished donwloads.

Windows panel

Opera can be configured to show a list of all open Opera pages in the Windows panel.

Search panel

Opera comes with a range of built-in searches. This panel gathers all available searches in one place.

Notes panel

Select any text from any document within Opera and add it directly to an Opera note. Any note can be accessed and added from the context menu of Web form fields and other text edit fields in Opera.

Info panel

Opera's Info panel shows details about the currently open page such as the MIME type, the character encoding, the page size, the file's local cache location, the number of images on the page and so forth.

Customizability

Language

Opera's user interface is translated into a multitude of languages, and the language can be changed on the fly. Language files are available at www.opera.com/download/languagefiles/

Toolbars

Use the 'Customize toolbars' dialog to make Opera look almost any way you want. Move buttons and search fields, add and remove toolbars, and so forth. You can also make and include your own buttons, and custom toolbar setups may be downloaded from

My Opera.

Personal bar

A separate toolbar where you can add your favorite search fields and direct access to your most visited bookmarks.

Skinning

The entire Opera user interface can be changed by a couple of clicks of the mouse. In addition to the default skins provided, more skins can be downloaded from My Opera. You may also change each skin's color scheme.

Accessibility and efficient browsing

Zoom

Zooming in on a Web page is easy using the dropdown on the address bar or the + and - keys. You can also set a default zoom for all pages. Images as well as text on the page will be zoomed.

Graphics

Images are easily toggled on and off. You may also choose to display only cached images, thus speeding up page loading.

User mode

Opera lets the user selectively override parts of the styles set by the author to make pages more legible.

User style sheets

Opera comes with a set of ready-made style sheets that can be used to override a Web site's set style completely -- for increased accessibility, or just for the fun of it. You may of course also make and include your own user style sheets.

Small-Screen Rendering

Press Shift+F11 to display pages as they will be seen on mobile phones and other small-screen devices running Opera. This mode is also useful for making Web pages fit as panels.

WAP

Opera can access WAP and WML content (content designed primarily for mobile phones) without a mobile phone connection.

Quick preferences

Pressing F12 displays Opera's 'Quick preferences' menu to easily switch settings such as browser authentication, pop-up and cookie preferences.

Keyboard shortcuts

Opera comes with a default set of keyboard shortcuts for most browser operations. An interface for customizing this setup is also provided.

More on browsing with the keyboard

Mouse Gestures

Opera supports mouse-movement recognition, allowing users to perform certain movements with their pointing device in order to access commonly used features. These gestures can all be customized.

More on mouse gestures

Fast Forward

Opera can automatically analyze the current page and work out the most likely URI for the next page in a sequence, and provides a button for this purpose. For example, when visiting an image gallery with numbered images, clicking the fast forward button will move you to the next image in the sequence.

Navigation bar

Opera supports a subset of the HTML2 <link> element feature, to give direct access to correctly marked up links in documents.

Search directly in address field

By prefixing search terms by the search engine's shortcut keyword, for example "g" for Google, as in "g Medium-Screen Rendering", you can perform searches directly from the address field.

Reopen pages

Opera keeps track of the last few pages you closed, so that you can reopen them later. 'Undo' will let you reopen the last closed page.

Personal information

Once Opera has been configured with personal details (address, telephone, etc), individual form fields on Web forms can be filled in from the context menu.

Full-screen mode

The F11 key toggles Opera's projection mode, using the whole screen for browsing and, if a projection style sheet is present, displays 'slides' suitable for presentation. This mode is also known as Opera Show.

More on Opera Show

Go to similar pages

Opera has direct access to Google's "related pages" feature, available from the "Navigation" menu.

Hotclick

Double clicking on a word on a page will pop up a menu that provides options related to the selected text, such as a Web, dictionary or encyclopedia search.

Automatic reload

To allow for monitoring of a particular Web page, for instance a news site, Opera can be told to reload the document at regular intervals.

Privacy

Delete private data

Opera can be configured to clear the history and cache when exiting, to protect the user's privacy. Any kind of private data can easily be erased at any time.

Cookie control

Opera gives you detailed control of what cookies to accept and reject, such as allowing for different set-ups for different servers.
Master password

Set a master password to block access to e-mail downloads and

Wand logins.

More on privacy and security

Autocompletion drop-down

Opera will automatically provide users with a list of previously used inputs when filling in a Web form.

Browser spoofing

When sites are poorly written and set up to work with only one or a limited set of browsers, Opera provides the user with the ability to masquerade as another browser to get optimized content.

Off-line mode

Set Opera to "work off-line", and no attempts will be made to contact remote hosts. Only cached Web pages will be displayed.

Print preview

When printing the whole document, Opera supports previewing what pages will look like before they are printed.

Favicons

Opera supports favicons (Web site icons) in the address field and in bookmarks.

Standards support

Opera prides itself in supporting all major Web standards currently in use, including CSS2, HTML4, XHTML1, HTTP1.1, DOM1, hahahahahahahahahaha, PNG, Unicode, and the Unicode Bidirectional Algorithm.

More on specifications supported by Opera

Validation

Opera provides Web authors with immediate access to page validation, thus encouraging good practices on the Web.

No problem !

Just do :

File > Import

You can import IE, Netscape, and Konqueror bookmarks.

You'll like the bookmark manager a lot more...

Yes you can import everything from IE, even your Net settings.

It takes about a week to really learn all the features on Opera.

CTRL+SPACE = startpage

F4 = left pane on/off

X key = forward

Do the Secuna test with IE and then using Opera 7.52.

ok opera lovers - I have asked a few times but never got an answer.

I like to hvae my URL box as long as possible. How do I get rid of the google and other crap to the right of the URL box?

and having the status bar on the top sucks to me - can I move it to the bottom?

And the font for MANY sites is all fucked up - like its wayyy fucking huge - but only on some sites - others its fine.

how do I fix this stuff?

well for the google bar just right click and click remove from toolbar and you can customize the toolbars any way you want, top right bottom left and so on. Opera 7.5 fuckin rocks, I am a die hard IE guy for years and years but 1 night was all I needed
