Pet peeve of the week - Commercials before movies!

When did it become OK for movie threaters to put 20 minutes worth of commercials before a movie?

They list the movie to start at 8:40, and the feature does not start until 9!

It is not just previews they show, but also commercials for Coke.

Don't these guys charge enough to see a movie?

But I do not force a person who just joined one of my sites to sit through a few ads before they can view the members area.

Sometimes it works out just fine, my boyfriend and I are notorious for showing up late.

Though sometimes I am so mesmorized by all the ads that I forget what movie I actually came to see.

I completely agree with you but the movie industry I think is just trying to sqeeze everything they can out of you, they even show fucking commercials for tv, few previews I think is o.k. until your eyes adjust to the theatre when they dim the lights but 20 min is way to much

GAH I have the same complaint! Pisses me right off! I wouldn't mind half as much if they were special commercials like Superbowl type stuff for the movie audience, but no, they're just the same crappy ads you see on tv every day.

Movie previews I don't mind at all. I'm referring to car, soda pop, computer, movietickets.com commercials on a 40' screen.

Yup, I agree 100%. I like to test the various ringers on my cell phone during the commercials.

I always go there 15 minutes late and 3 minutes after the movie has started. Then I make my way to the middle, and take off my jacket and make myself comfortable. Maybe talk with my girl for a while first before actually watching the movie.

People seem to appreciate this.

The only run commercials in that time before the previews would normally start.. at least up here.

Its not like its a 9:30 show and at 9:30 they start the commercials. Of course it very well might be different down there.

Don't show up so early.

Most of the money from a movie ticket goes to the studios...in some cases...all of it. Theaters make their money on snacks and commercials. The other option would be to make the snacks cheap and show no commercials but to charge $20 for a movie ticket.

I don't mind movie trailers as they are part of the moviegoing experience...
although, in the case of "Jersey Girl", the commercials were better.......

I believe there was a class-action lawsuit against some theatre chain, and they won, regarding the movie playtime stating for example 8:40 but only actually starting at 9.

In all honesty I do enjoy good trailers (not the ones that show you the whole fucking movie), except I'd like to be able to choose and show up early instead of it being the other way around.

I suppose they could use the idea that people need to be seated before they can show the previews because of safety issues of the lights being off but I think if people have kids or have a difficult time sitting down then they should probably come earlier anyways.

Just ranting because the I.Robot preview last night was so stupidly long and told the whole plot, what little plot there seems to be.

Cheers,
Mat

Just another reason why I'd rather buy the bootlegs in downtown LA and watch them on dvd. Hell, you can get stuff here before it's in theaters if you find the right set of homeys

DVD's and big screen TV's with good sound is the way to go.

Whats more annoying to me is that schools have vending machines, and museum displays are now SPONSORED by companies (ie: insect display sponsored by Terminex etc.)

At least a movie is a commercial venture, but schools and museums are most certainly not. Or are they?

What needs to be done is this! if somebody owns a theatre giveaway the tix and make sure that people stay and watch and flood the whole theatre with ads! Posters, overhead speaker commercials in the waiting area, and commercials before, between & after the movie! nut this way noone can complain about the ads! But fuck dont charge us and force us to watch fucking ads! I agree it is complete bullshit!

And the justification for the huge increase in movie ticket prices is so they don't have to show ads.

5 years ago I could go see a movie for $4 a ticket and there was like 2 movie previews. Now it's more like $15 to get in and you have to sit through 1/2 hour of commercials.

I hate when I rent a movie and they have scenes from the movie that I'm about to watch before the movie starts. That drives me crazy.

To ice this cake.... how about the blatent product placements within the movies themselves now? It's like come on... the can of Mountain Dew just happened to be dead center in that shot in better focus than the actor!!

And going back to what Tom_PM says about museum displays being corporately sponsored.... I was at Disney World (Orlando) about 5yrs ago, and the place had gone nuts with the corporate sponsoring. Space Mountain sponsored by FedEx - Kodak Image Theatre, and a slew of others.

Maybe some don't even notice it as being right in their face... but to me it cheapens out the whole experience.
