Ok, so here is the plan.

We need to raise poodles and super cute kittens for the purpose of slaughter. Then, we kill them in a humane way and proceed to eat them. No one will have a problem with this?

pussy is tasty, I have no problem with that at all

-fish
-lobsters, shrimp, insects.
-fruit and vegetables

obviously I skipped a few species.. but the general idea is you draw a line somewhere on that list and only eat the animals below it. Of course, the actual nutritional value of the animal is important too. You can feed a lot more people by taking 1 cow life than taking 1 dog life. And if you're starving, then you can't afford to make moral choices.

it is my understanding that pigs are a lot smarter than dogs

ever read Animal Farm?

Have a look at China, they do slaughter dogs and eat them.

And have another look at history: those people who didnīt think they should slaughter every living thing down werenīt the most stupid.

So everything depends on the development a society got through. Even the Romans kept their folks down with "panem et circenses" - those famous gladiator games.

There seems to be a mistake in that hierarchy. If the average intelligence is the base, it should be this way:

-chimps
-dolphins
-dogs
-pigs
-cows
-chickens
-fish

If animals could talk, would you still eat them?

It depends what they said to me.

Rick,

What about setting up a fake slaughterhouse, just on paper, and try to obtain a license for killing dogs or other "cute" animals ?

That way you would get an official explanation on paper why it is not possible / allowed.

Most answers in this thread are plain ignorant. Pitty.

Maybe domestic animals do to. We haven't had a chance to try!

Not from my experience.

But being irrational at times is arguably what makes humans interesting. If our behaviour was always rational and always followed consistent logic then we might be very predictable and boring.

Cause cows don't go fetch :2 cents:

Pussy Dialers 07-05-2004 04:09 PM

You can shoot any animal at anytime but first you need to say thest words very loud so your neighbors can hear you.

Watch out! It's about to attack.

I learned that from South Park :)

Nysus 07-05-2004 04:30 PM

How much comfort can most cows bring you compared to most dogs?

You can't shoot a cow with a gun and kill it. The way they kill cows is by firing two bolts into the side of their head which as far as I know knocks them out so they don't feel what happens to them next.

If you shoot a dog in the head with a gun you'll likely not kill it.

I guess it comes down to respect really. I don't have a problem with the people that eat dogs or any other animal, so long as they don't feel it.

And I don't put humans any higher than other animals, though we don't eat humans, some people do still though that is because that's how they have found to get a source of meat.

Really you can compare all of this to if you had to eat a person. Would you want them to not suffer? If you would then you're a fucked up person in my opinion. :)

Cheers,
Matt

I ate them in China. They don't taste that good. I'd rather eat some chicken.

Just another one of mankind?s hypocrisies. Like exactly which inches of skin are rude and which aren?t - they are all made of the same stuff!!!

Yes, but that's the exception, not the rule.

When does farming end and animal cruelty begin...

Rick, perhaps this is one of those things like "obscenity".

You'll know it when you see it.

Interesting point. Obscenity is a moral issue defined by what doesn't have ANY redeeming quality what-so-ever. For instance, Consumption Junction is not obscene because we have witty commentary on the site.

Does this mean that you can kill any animal you own as long as you do it humanely? I guess it does, after all you can have a dog put to sleep.

I saw a comedian tell a joke one time that he read it was illegal to have sex with a dead animal. He said, "what would tell the judge? Your honor I thought the cat was alive?"

Rankings 07-05-2004 07:41 PM

you just can't.
