Exactly sometimes people need their alone time even if it's in a public place if you get my drift.

BVF 07-03-2004 07:22 PM

I eat my Sirloin Gorgonzola in the bar area of my local steakhouse/sportsbar . I would have a problem sitting at a regular table in a restaurant though even though I've done it..

If you're somewhere like Denny's you can eat at a table by yourself..But if it's in a decent restaurant, eat it in the bar area.

Mutt 07-03-2004 07:24 PM

for lunch at a fast food type restaurant i have no problem with it.

but dinner at a decent, and i'm not talking 5 star fancy, restaurant - i'm too self conscious, feels too awkward, not when you're eating, when you're waiting, i don't know where to look, i don't want to stare at other tables, don't wanna stare at the table top, where are you supposed to look if you're not by a window.

there's definitely nothing wrong with it - but i think alot of people aren't comfortable with it.

bogo 07-03-2004 07:24 PM

exactly...if you HAVE to eat alone, just sit at the bar and order a plate..

BlackCrayon 07-03-2004 07:32 PM

i do it all the time on the road, tho thats different. i don't really care what ppl think anyways.

"oh my god hes eating alone. he must have some kind of deformed penis."

chodadog 07-03-2004 07:34 PM

I do it from time to time. It doesn't make me feel uncomfortable, although i can see how it would make some people feel like that.

I remove all wonder by wearing my "I have a deformed penis" shirt when I go out to eat alone.

Nobody fucks with me.

I go to the airport bar even if I'm not going to fly. It's the only place you can drink at 6 am and no one looks at you funny.

No it does not make me uncomfortable.

I eat at home now but use 2 eat out 3 times per day.

biglou 07-03-2004 07:41 PM

I do all the time. I've even thought about putting together a website that reviews restaurants based on how well they treat the solo diner.

Fizzgig 07-03-2004 07:42 PM

I can't stand being in any public place alone.
In the mall/stores I talk to myself a lot and though I always do it if I'm alone, it still embarrasses me.
The bank is the worst! Where do you look?
I'll drink coffee alone but only if I have something to do/read or anything to keep myself occupied. If not, I take out and sit in the park or something.

Thankfully, I have a large family so it doesn't have to happen too often :)

Fizzgig 07-03-2004 07:43 PM

Oh. Great. Now I'm on a page alone!

*Looks around...backs out of thread*

Ahhhh! Everyone is looking at me!!!

cosis 07-03-2004 08:10 PM

don't it a few times, usually during road trips, but it never bothered me...... usually I eat at the bar

Yes it does make myself feel uncomfortable, tho I do it once in awhile. Sit at a table looking around me nothing but couples talking, smiling laughing. I order, eat, pay and go inside of 30 minutes.
Dont sit around for the relaxing part.

I need to hook myself up with a nice girl this time, someone who would like me for my kind hearted nature and one who dosnt complain when I sit on this pc untill 1 or 2am every day of the week.

wdsguy 07-03-2004 10:34 PM

yep nuthin wrong with it

dude, this is so true what you said. or another thing is eating and talking on the cellphone. omfg, that is so ridiculuous, like you have no time to call after the dinner. i am from europe, so as you know we eat out home like 10 times a year. so no i eat never alone, though i eat always alone at home.

ModelBuffet 07-04-2004 04:46 AM

You have to be pretty insecure not to be able to eat alone. :2 cents:

angeleyes 07-04-2004 05:41 AM

I've done it a few times at the Deli down the road. It's very relaxing and peaceful if you want to clear your mind. :2 cents:

chodadog 07-04-2004 07:04 AM

I'm amazed at how self concious some people are.

MaDalton 07-04-2004 07:22 AM

Harvey is always with me. :glugglug

bringer 07-04-2004 07:37 AM

you could start talking to the other chair like someones actually there. works great!

Herb Kornfield 07-04-2004 07:47 AM

I get take out 100% of the time when eating alone. The service generally sucks that you get when dining alone.

It is getting really rare for whatever reason to get decent service at a lot of places anymore. Having to wait for cutlery, ask 3x for water and having all the food hit the table at once, then waiting on the check which takes an eternity is just insane.

Most resturants start out really good and then after a few months they turn into shit. Wish that didnt happen for the most part because there are some nice places out there in which the shitty service kills them.

We just stay home and cook. I can get what I need out of the cabinets, make sure everyone has everything they need and there is no check at the end.

NoCarrier 07-04-2004 07:48 AM

Eating naked and alone in a restaurant, now that's uncomfortable.

im the same way

ill eat fast food alone but at restaurants ill just call ahead and take out and eat in a park or something if i want to be alone

jayeff 07-04-2004 08:33 AM

In the days when my occupation was a lot more stressful than this, one of my favorite ways to relax was to go to a really good restaurant by myself. A couple of hours peace and quiet while being looked after with good wine and food: wonderful! It was something I did 2 or 3 times a week for years.

As a matter of fact, I met my second wife on one such excursion :)

DarkJedi 07-04-2004 09:30 AM

If you can't eat alone, why are you still alive? Do you constantly need others company to validate your own self worth?

Not able? Who's not able? It's just.. weird. I did it a couple times.

C_U_Next_Tuesday 07-04-2004 09:36 AM

Try people watching while eating alone.. you will then realize there is no reason to be self consicous...I love to people watch:thumbsup

biglou 07-04-2004 10:43 AM

As far as being uncomfortable, I think that I am more uncomfortable eating with other people than I am eating alone.

Exactly. One of the greatest stress-relievers ever recommended is to dine out alone at a restaurant, and view people through the tines of a fork and pretend they're in jail.

I do this all the time.

angelsofporn 07-04-2004 10:59 AM

I've done it every day for years...great time to read the paper or whatever book you're reading at that time.
Nothing better than a nice meal with no one bothering you and a couple glasses of iced tea.

I eat, read my book, smoke, chill out and watch the people around me.

That's daytime of course, at night I'm not all that much for going out to eat alone unless it's a hotel restaurant where I'm staying. But then again, my lazy ass is also addicted to room service if I'm in a hotel alone :)
