Some of you webmasters with huge monitors

.... you need to start resizing your browser window to about 1/2 and then view your site in what it would look like on a smaller screen.

Why?

Because some of your pages are the size of football fields with a mile of side-scrolling.

I can tell instantly that the webmaster has like a 22 or 24 inch monitor or something ridiculous like that.

Fix your damned sites. That much side-scrolling sucks. If you're stumped and want to know how to fix it ask someone. You can shoot me an icq at 31024634. Remember to include your url.

I usually do layouts based on an 800x600 template, often times even 640x480. I use a 22 inch monitor. but I know what your talking about. some people have huge layouts that take up my whole screen. cant imagine what folks running low res small screens are seeing.

Bigger monitor has nothing to do with the size of the pages.

It's about resolution. But you of course knew that.

My 15" laptop screen has 1400x1050 resolution and my 19" crt has 1280x1024

seeee...?

Aside from that. Just make the design 760 wide or so, and you'll have no problems, regardless on what resolution you do shit.

The are seeing a mile of side-scrolling and only about 1/3 of their actual web page. That's what they're seeing.

It can be fixed by setting the tables to percentages rather than fixed widths.

width=90% rather than width=1600 or whatever. Try to keep track of the widths of images in the various columns of the page too, because you can set your tables to be "collapsible" all you want but if the images in your tables force your pages to be 2000 pixels wide then you're screwed that way too.

Most professional sites that use the "entire page" layout are compatible even on 14" monitors. One only need to find one, view source, and figure out how they're doing it.

Yes, but no one I know sets their monitor to those higher resolutions unless their monitor is huge.

I was trying to keep things in plain Engrish for those who are website challenged.

Try to design for a litlte under 800 wide, because usually people are running icq or trillian or something up the side of their screen, too. The browser should not HAVE to take up all the real estate.

Yeah tables that will resize is the key. I dont surf alot of sites so I havent seen that many, but i know for a fact there are a shit ton of poorly designed ones out there.

I have a large monitor, but I dont build sites with fixed width tables and the liike, so I never run into problems unless someone has a really small 640x480 screen or whatever.

All it takes is to load whatever page you're working on in your browser, then click the resize button and see what your page looks like in a smaller window. It's a quick and eay way to check it.

You can't please everyone's resolution & monitor size, but you can make your sites more compatible and look good for most of them anyway.

I have a 17" flat screen that is always set to 1024 x 768. I've checked my pages in other higher and lower resolutions and they all look acceptable to me anyway.
