DRINKING IS GOOD FOR BONES
Jul 1 2004 By Nick Sommerlad MODERATE drinking strengthens women's bones, say researchers. A study of 46 pairs of identical twins, showed the modest drinker had "significantly" denser bones than the one which had little or no alcohol - helping to fight brittle bone disease. The reasons are still unknown. The findings confirmed previous studies which found smoking causes thin bones and osteoporosis. But Professor Tim Spector, of St Thomas' Hospital in London, said it was unlikely doctors would now prescribe regular drinking to women. "Alcohol is like any other drug. Different people will react differently to it. "Some people do not tolerate alcohol very well, will go red in the face or fall over, which would not help their bones." |
