.htaccess re-direct hurt SEO?

I need to use .htaccess to re-direct some traffic... will it hurt with search engines?

.htaccess it server-side thing - do almost all same things like httpd.conf at Apache based server.

Not all .htaccess redirects are the same...
it is possible to redirect traffic completely transparently...

it seems for the research I've done the last hour that .htaccess would be OK.. in fact many SEO programs are written with .htaccess controlling things...

It should be ok but be careful how you redirect people. Make sure the bots always get a 200 response code.
