on a serious note tho,

black trash bags if your close to a lake, fill it up and hang it from a tree.. the black bag heats up the water pretty good and you can get a nice warm shower while your outdoors..

saw that on some t.v show a while ago

You've never been before and this is your first time and you want to know what to bring.... easy..

microwave, cell phone, television, xbox....

I used to manage a hunting/fishing trailer park, and 90% of those people had those things, some even set up satellite dishes on their trailers.

If you're a city person hitting the woods, those things are essentials

* especially the cell phone, because you can't get a signal for miles and it makes for a great paper weight if you need to set down the map.. oh yeah, don't forget a map

Well, I backpack when I hit the woods, so my needs are more minimal than most people's. But prepare for rain, double-check the cooking/eating gear, and pack your toiletries a week in advance and use only the stuff you packed to make sure you don't forget anything. Flashlights, ground pads, and toilet paper are also things easily forgotten by newbie campers.

Oh, and if the bugs aren't bad, bring a tent buy don't use it... sleep in an area where there are no trees above you and fall asleep gazing at billions of stars... it's incredible, trust me.

Oh, and NEVER leave any food out at night! Seal it away. Scavengers are often nocturnal, and will be very creative in getting into your food.

Have fun!

First on my list is always...First Aid kit..an essential!! The rest depends on how ur getting there...If ur taking the car...then take everything .. If not take lots of layering clothing...they retain warmth better than jumpers...and easy to cool down if 2 hot. Camping is wicked...Hope u have a fantastic time

This year the bugs are going to be horrid...in the East we have the cicadas, and in the mid-west I hear that the mosquitos are forming clouds (my parents live there...not in a cloud of mosquitos, but the mid-west).

And plenty of beer. Nothing sucks more then running out at 2 in the morning.

Summer upstate NY is a special environmental condition in the mountains.

If you don't have to worry about space, bring a warm sleeping bag in case it gets cold. Also bring a fleece blanket in case it's not that cold. The perils of not having both:

If it's too cold you'll freeze.

If it's too hot and you only have a really warm bag, you will sweat your ass off. That combined with the moisture from the air will make everything really wet, sticky, and hot. Then you get the mosquitos that LOVE hot sweat at night. They can sense you and you're white meat to them.

Bring a ton of rope to hang your food up in the trees with. It's called a bear bag. They can smell it and they will get it if it's within reach.

Get a closed cell foam pad for insulation and padding. Don't use an eggcrate or it will probably get really wet from the air.

Raingear very important.

Windproof reliable lighter important.

Pocketknife for amputating body parts, making stakes, making steaks, opening bottles or cans, cutting rope, defending yourself in a monkey knife fight, etc.

Flashlight for seeing in the dark.

TP cuz leaves hurt and you probably don't know the difference between poison ivy and weed.

Compass and map because there's nothing worse than a city slicker lost webmaster in the woods.

Tent for sleeping in. Make SURE you know how to set it up in the dark, because it gets dark earlier in the mountains and you're surrounded by trees.

Dryer lint in a ziploc bag just in case you don't trust your firestarting abilities.

DEET.

A shitload of water. You don't know how much you will drink sitting outside all day. Bring WAY more than you thought you'd need. At least a gallon per person per day plus what you'd need for cooking.

Food. Don't bring too much that requires cooling as nothing you have will be cool after a day. Don't forget the means to cook said food.

Trash bags. Excellent for waterproofing stuff, hanging food, and carrying out the trash you would probably leave in the campsite.

Shovel for putting out the fire you forgot you had no way of putting out.

Suntan lotion, a good hat, and sunglasses.

First Aid Kit

Soap for washing dishes and yourself.

Whistle for scaring away bear or whistling for help.

Other emergency signaling devices like cell, mirror, Breitling Satellite Transponder watch, radio, etc.

way cool... I camp/backpack in high places and unaccessible quite often.

Since you aren't camping in accessible spot, I would suggest the "10 essentials"..

http://www.backpacking.net/ten-essl.html

and don't leave food around for the wild animals..we don't want them to learn to associate people with food. Hang your food stuffs if you are in bear country..

oh, and HAVE FUN!

Really important... tell a trustworthy friend the general area you plan to be in and when you'll be back.

This way someone will come looking for you when you don't return

I'm more of a condo camper these days...cottages or trailers only! I stopped tent camping when I hit 21.

Don't forget;

Blankets
Pillows
OFF or Deep Woods is good too
Lot's of water
Firewood
Beers etc.,
Be sure there is a store as you will need lots of ice!
