    photographers, any tips?

looking to take candid style pics, but i dont want them to be candid lol

    mind sharing some pointers?

ive been telling people stuff like "dont look at the cam" or "pretend like you are doing this ...", etc.

also id like tips on couple shots. Anytime i go to take a pic of a couple, they end up next to each other, guys arm is around her shoulder and he finds something to do with his spare hand.

as a result, all my couple pics look alike lol

tips on setting up a nice pose?

    thanks in advance.

take shots when they are not ready...least expected.. they always come out more natural and less 'pose' looking

How fast is your camera at focussing and actually shooting the image? For candid shots you probably want "shutter lag" to be as low as possible.

There's nothing worse than saying "boo" to someone, pressing the shutter and then having to wait for 5 seconds while the damn thing focusses. By then they're onto you and the fake smile comes out, or they hide their face.

Good point, direct them to a certain action but dont tell them exactaly what you are looking for. Be sharp and you'll get the shot you need.

Maybe better not to set it up - let it run naturally and stuff in some verbal of a "situation" and how they'd react blah - then shrink into the background and be "accepted". I used to do this stuff decades ago, but now ya can shoot a vid sequence and select the "stills" that suit?

Setup strategic 'hidden camera' in the room, just have the talent come in for a regular old shoot without knowing the camera is there. This way you are able to get natural unplanned behind the scenes action.

I believe a surfer who is into this type of stuff - is looking for real candid shit, not perfect shots. Sometimes objects in front of the camera (ex: a plant/towel) - blushing, giggling and all of that other bs can turn a person on who is into that type of niche.

This is just what I would do, i'm no expert.

This is all down to your personality and the way you motivate them.

Hard to explain, you either have it or you do not. Sometimes it can be down to the models, but more often it's down to the shooter.

For instance how relaxed are you with the equipment?

Do you know how to direct them so it looks like it's undirected?

It can sometimes be hard to get actual lovers to make love for real in front of a camera.

                                exactly!
i definately need to find a true "point-n-shoot" machine, all the ones i have have auto focus and it takes fucking forever!

Anyhow, im thinking more along the lines of family shots, memorable stuff.

the kind of shots you see in the logo of a personals site, etc.

it usually does not look very directed, thats what im after.

thanks for all pointers so far.

Shoot with plenty of light and continious focus mode.

Might try burst shots too. At any rate have plenty of memory and shoot way more than you plan to use. Just keep shooting through the action. Best if the subject doesn't know when the shutter goes off. One of the reasons for the light. That and quicker focus. If your camera makes any sound at all, have music playing to drown it out.

After the shoot, you'll have time to go through your hundreds of shots. Have software to make sorting quick and easy. Explorer in XP works. Idea is, you'll trash most of what you took.

I am NOT a pro. That means I have to get lucky. So I increase the odds by taking a ton of Pics.

Practice with the camera and lighting you plan to use before the shot if you can. Ditto on know your camera.

                                    Good Luck
