Study reveals 60,000 Irish porn pages
More than 60,000 Web pages with pornography on them are hosted on the Irish dot-ie domain, according to new research.
Ireland has been ranked 22 of 41 European countries in the first "Global Study on Web Porn," with 60,800 individual pages containing pornography listed on dot-ie (.ie) domains. Germany, the United Kingdom and Australia topped the survey. Some 46 million pages of pornography contained in California-based Secure Computing's SmartFilter Control List database were overwhelmingly concentrated in two regions: Europe and the Pacific. There were 28 million pages in European domains and Australia and islands in the Pacific accounted for 12 million pages. Internet pornography was scant in African domains and almost non-existent in Middle Eastern domains. The study examined pornographic Web pages hosted on non-US country suffixes, such as dot-de (.de) for Germany and dot-jp (.jp) for Japan. Virtually every country suffix on the continent of Europe was found by researchers to have some pornographic sites, according to the study. The dot-li (.li) suffix of Liechtenstein hosts 27,800 pornographic pages and the dot-mc (.mc) suffix of Monaco hosts 2,400. The research was limited to specific country suffixes and did not include non-country specific domains such as dot-com (.com) and dot-net (.net). The US was excluded because the dot-us (.us) extension is "not really used" and the dot-com extension can be registered from anywhere, said David Burt, Secure Computing public relations manager. "We thought about using geolocation software to find the countries but that, although worthy, would entail a very big study," he told ElectricNews.Net. The domain suffixes of a number of small islands in the Pacific host a large number of pornographic Web pages, according to the research. The island nation of Niue hosts 3 million pages of pornography on its dot-nu (.nu) domain and other island domains that each host hundreds of thousands of pages of pornography are the suffixes of Tonga, Christmas Island, the Cocos Islands, Tuvalu, and Vanuatu. San Jose-headquartered Secure Computing found that the dot-st (.st) domain suffix of the smallest country in Africa, the island nation of Sao Tome, hosts 307,000 pages of pornography. This represents three quarters of all of the 389,000 pages of pornography with African suffixes contained in the database, according to the firm. The only Middle Eastern domain suffix to host pornographic web pages in the SmartFilter database is the Israeli dot-il (.il), which hosts 77,800. The only Arab country domain in the database that hosts any pornography is the Libyan dot-ly (.ly). |
