Whats the optimum way to slice images for fast downloads

Hi,

When slicing images on a tour what do you think is the optimum number of slices to increase download speed? I read where having too many slices/images would actually increase the page download speed. I know the idea is to let surfers on slow modems see things while they wait for everything to download.

Thanks
Joe S.

Best way I've found is to slice larger areas containing few colors and save as gif or png with as low a palette size as is tolerable. Then the busy photographic areas such as faces save as jpg. You have to be careful with color matching, but this can drasticly reduce the size of a page.

On a normal size page fitted to 800x600 resolution, I wouldn't have more than about 60 slices for the graphics above the fold. But it really depends on page composition. Also many image slicers use a lot of unnecessary HTML tags, you can reduce the size of the sliced image futher by editing out all superfluous HTML.

Try Fireworks, gives you very nice control over slices

Use JPG if there are many colors and GIF if there are a few. It's pretty simple.

This is sort of related to what you're asking. I thought it was pretty good.

Thanks Holly! Cool post.

Now I'm wondering if I should use a long page tour or break it up into a several page tour. The long page tours are as common now as the several page tours now. But I wonder about download time for pages on the long tours and how they effect sales.
