Would there be a really noticeable difference in these 2 server specs?

Intel Celeron 2.4 GHZ
* 512 MB DDR RAM
* 80 gig IDE HD
* 1000 gigs bw

Intel Pentium4 2.8 GHZ
* 1 GB DDR RAM
* 120 gig IDE HD
* 1000 gigs bw

I know the second one is going to be better, but I'm trying to figure out if it will make a huge, noticeable difference.

For the most part, I think I would only be using it for static pages- galleries, images, some mpegs, basic stuff. Maybe a little php for footers/menus that need to be across several pages and are subject to change. I don't think there would be anything intensive enough to make much of a difference, but does that sound right?

What if I ever wanted to put a trade script on it? Is anyone running anything like that on a celeron? Or what about mysql on a celeron?

I guess I basically want to know if the celeron is gonna suck. I've got a couple people telling me they're fine unless it's something really intensive, and I've got a couple who swear they're from the devil. I'm clueless. Help me out.

I am not an expert at these things ;-), but for 1000 GB of Bandwidth, both should be fine for basic image / html / movie serving.

Get into cgi, php, db, and other stuff.. well I guess it depends on code.

Big difference, I think Celerons are useless but if you're doing just static content then you will be ok. The P4 will smoke it anyday.

The most importent part for me is .. that server 2 has twice as much mem..

Then about the processors .... there is not much difference except that the p4 will do beter in multie tasking.

I would go for the celeron .... with 1024mb mem (thats more importent then the processor in this case)

This is kinda what I'm getting from other people. Some say the celeron would be fine, some absolutely hate them. If it can't handle much I suppose I can always stick to strictly static pages, which is what I was thinking to begin with. But then I had a couple of people tell me they run all sorts of stuff on celerons with no problems and that I shouldn't think like that.

Thanks for the answers so far. I'm sending you all a picture of Juicy's penis right now.

I use a Celeron and run a few trade scripts, tgp scripts, gallery spider, heavy stats script, etc. No problems at all. Only sometimes I'm a bit low on memory (512Mb), but the gallery spider and MySQL can sometimes use a lot.

Depends on the price difference

I say go for the Intel if its like 10% more in price.

I agree with that. Post the prices. If it's $25 I would get the P4

if you run scripts, cgi, mySQL, tgp sites, perl you need the one with the ram.

if you are just hosting pix, mpgs, and html you will not tell the difference.

That's what I'm waiting to hear. It was sort of an unexpected offer on the celeron. Someone had left them hanging so they made me a really good deal. I was going to take it, then a friend gave me the bad feedback about celerons and said not to do it. I mentioned this and then was told it should be fine but they'd check about a deal on the p4 I listed.

I don't really even *have* to have it right this second. I was gonna go ahead and do it just because it was a good deal. Plus, I have one host who's pissing me off, so if I go ahead and get this I'm moving all my shit off the server I have there. I've never done any sort of hosting on a celeron so I wasn't sure how big of a difference it would make.

Celeron chips have less cache memory than Pentium 4 chips do. A Celeron might have 128 kilobytes of L2 cache, while a Pentium 4 can have four times that. The amount of L2 cache memory can have a big effect on performance.

Intel manufactures the Pentium 4 chips to run at a higher clock speed than Celeron chips. The fastest Pentium 4 might be 60 percent faster than the fastest Celeron.

There are differences in the maximum bus speeds that the processors allow. Pentium 4s tend to be about 30 percent faster than Celerons.

(I did a google for "difference between Celeron and Pentium 4")

Ah hell, now I've got to try and make my ICQ work.
It's fux0r3d (I used that word just for you ) It's been so long since it was right that I've learned to live without it. Maybe the God's will smile on me and it will connect and think the password is correct.

I'm gonna get the P4, btw. I think it's only gonna be a $20 difference.

*kiss* *kiss*
