question about shooting content...

..sooo, i am a pro photographer, i have top notch digital cameras, becouse i am addicted to photo-gizmos...the question is: do i have to shoot in 3000x2000 pixels (6Mp)? Does any one uses this size of images for anything on the web? What's the size you pro's out there usually shoot ?

If you can, why not shoot at the highest settings?

Take the high quality originals and then edit, optimize, & compress.

The better the original, the better the final outcome...

Exactly. Plus, you never know when you may want to use an old shot for print work...I'd rather have a full size pic to make a banner than kick myself later for not shooting in full resolution.

I have ALWAYS shot my content in full resolution. I know a fairly decent size affiliate program that produces their own content and they rarely shoot full resolution...Pretty stupid if you ask me.

Shoot highest rez, lowest compression

With the prices of both memory (sticks and flash) and hard disk space going down (as if it's not low enough), you have nothing to worry about.

The human eye cannot discern anything beyond 3megapixels. I have a 5mp NIKON and always shoot at hi res (4mp) - never in raw (5mp+) - what's the point unless what I'm shooting is going to print then I may need a huge file with crazy resolution

That's exactly the reason to do it.

...thanks, i was expecting something like that, though for today's internet 6Mp seems a bit too much, i just finished a 8000+ images bulk sales package, smallest images at 1280... it has over 1Gb, so it won't be an easy task for the buyers to download it...

shoot in best quality possible - otherwise you might regret it someday. cause we do now. at the beginning we shot just for our own websites and thought 1280x960 or 1600x1200 would be enough for that. Now that we sell content, even for print, we could bite ourselves in the asses that a lot of old content is not usable for that.

So he is pro photographer and asking if he is supposed to shot in highest possible res?
Basicly is there any reason why to shot in lower resolution?Maybe save some money for microdrives and use 128Mb CF?

...actually there would be more than one reason, but to stick to your "kind" comment, yes, that's also a problem here in the middle of nowhere where I am located, no CF cards bigger than 1Gb, and at one shooting i can easy produce around 3000 images - i plan my shootings so when i rent a location, i also call quite a few models - i usually shoot in RAW so i get around 150 images on one card, that would be around 20 pauses in the process of shooting, to download the pics on the 7 kg laptop i usually carry with me, along with the 2 cameras, 4-5 lenses, 3 Broncolor heads with 1.5 meters softboxes, tripods, cables...and, BTW, it's a SHE not a HE - and she would be VERY happy not to carry around at least the 15 pounds laptop... Thanks
