MATCH STATS
Head-to-heads

Portugal and England have met each other once at the European Championship. In 2000, Portugal came back from 2-0 behind to beat England 3-2.
On 12 June 2000 in the Philips Stadium in Eindhoven, England led 2-0 after 18 minutes through goals from Paul Scholes and Steve McManaman. Portugal cancalled those out by half time through Luis Figo and Joăo Pinto. They then went on to win the game courtesy of a Nuno Gomes goal.
At Euro 2000, Portugal won the group without losing a single point while England were knocked out at the group stage, finishing third behind Portugal and Romania.
The two countries have met each other twice in the World Cup. In 1966, England won 2-1 at the semi-final stage while Portugal beat England 1-0 in a group stage match at the 1986 World Cup in Mexico.
England have met Portugal on 20 previous occasions winning nine times and losing only three. Eight matches finished in a draw. England have outscored Portugal 43-23.
In their most recent meeting last February the points were split in a friendly in Faro. Ledley King (on his debut) scored for England and Pauleta brought the home side on level terms.
Player facts - Portugal

Pauleta is suspended for this quarter-final match after receiving yellow cards in the group phase.
Luis Figo is joint leader on the all-time list of most assists (five) at the European Championship. The other is his Real Madrid team mate and adversary in this game - David Beckham.
Portugal's striker Nuno Gomes scored his fifth career goal at the European Championships against Spain. Only three players have scored more European Championship goals - Michel Platini (nine), Alan Shearer (seven) and Patrick Kluivert (six).
With his goal in the opening match between Portugal and Greece, Cristiano Ronaldo is the fourth youngest goal scorer ever at a European Championship. He was the second youngest at the time, but since then, Johan Vonlanthen (Switzerland) and Wayne Rooney (England) have overtaken him on this all-time list.
Rui Costa's goal in the group phase match against Russia made him the second oldest Portuguese player to net at a European Championship at the age of 32. The Portuguese record is held by Nené who scored at the age of 34 at Euro 1984 against Romania.
Luis Figo is top scorer in the Portugal squad present at Euro 2004 with 31 goals. Figo is second on Portugal's all-time top scorers list, trailing leader Eusebio by 10 goals.
Player facts - England

Against Switzerland, Gary Neville played in his tenth European Championship match breaking the English record previously shared by Tony Adams and Alan Shearer.
Wayne Rooney is the current top scorer in the competition with four goals. The youngster is just three goals away from becoming the all-time English top scorer at the European Championship. Record holder is Alan Shearer with seven goals.
The first goal Rooney scored in the group stage match against Switzerland made him the youngest player ever to score at the European Championship. Rooney has already lost this record to Swiss striker Johan Vonlanthen.
Rooney had also become the second youngest player to appear in a European Championship match on 13 June. But that distinction was also taken away from him by Vonlanthen. Youngest player ever to appear at the European Championships is Belgium's Enzo Scifo in 1984.
David Beckham is joint leader on the all-time list of most assists (five) at the European Championship. The other is his Real Madrid team mate and adversary in this game - Luis Figo.
Nicky Butt is one of two Euro 2004 players to have left his squad and to have not been replaced. The injured midfielder was joined by Russia's Alexandr Mostovoi who was sent home for disciplinary reasons.
Michael Owen has scored by far the most goals from the current England squad (25). With his goal against Croatia, Paul Scholes is the next best with 14.
If he plays, Phil Neville will earn his 50th career cap for England.
Owen needs one more goal to enter the top ten scorers list for England, equalling the total scored by Bryan Robson (26). Bobby Charlton leads England's top scorers list with 49.
England have had only one player sent off in their 21 matches at European Championships. In their debut fixture in 1968, Alan Mullery was red carded (against Yugoslavia).
Team facts - Portugal

Portugal have scored at least one goal in their last eight European Championship matches. Portugal had equalled the all-time record which belonged to both Germany (1988-1992) and France (2000-running), but the French took sole possession of the record when they extended their scoring streak to nine matches against Switzerland.
Portugal's best achievement at the European Championship is reaching the semi-finals twice in 1984 and 2000. On both occasions the Portuguese were eliminated by France.
Portugal are the only team to have successfully negotiated all their previous group phases.
The only country to win the European Championship after losing the first game is Holland, in 1988.
Portugal are one of only seven countries who qualified for the knockout stages after losing the first round match. Denmark (1984), the Netherlands (1988), Czech Republic (1996), Turkey (2000), Spain (2000) and England (2004) are the others.
Nine of the Portuguese squad members were also present at Euro 2000. All nine played at least a game in that tournament.
Three of the Portuguese squad played at Euro '96 - Fernando Couto, Rui Costa and Figo are the trio.
16 of Portugal's squad play their club football in Portugal. Two play in Italy, two in Spain, two in England and one in France.
Team facts - England

For the first time ever, England have survived the group phase at the European Championship when not hosting the championship. In 1996, England reached the semi-finals as hosts in which they lost against Germany.
England's best result at a European Championship final round is third place in 1968 and reaching the semi-finals in 1996.
England are only one of seven countries who qualified for the knockout stages after losing the first round match.
The victory against Croatia marked only the second time England have won successive European Championship matches. The only other occasion was Euro '96 when they edged Scotland (2-0) and Holland (4-1).
In three matches at Euro 2004 England have scored eight times, equalling their goal scoring tally in their entire Euro '96 campaign.
Only two players of England's squad at Euro 2004 play club football outside England. The two are Owen Hargreaves (Bayern Munich) and David Beckham (Real Madrid).
Miscellaneous stats

No host nation has got further than the semi-finals since 1984.
Portugal's and England's progress means each of the three Euro 2004 participants with a foreign manager have all survived the group phase. Together with Otto Rehhagel (Greece), Luiz Felipe Scolari (Portugal) and Sven-Goran Eriksson (England) led their teams into the last eight.
Portugal's trainer Luiz Felipe Scolari is aiming to become the first trainer to win a World Cup and European Championship with two different teams.
In 2002, Scolari led the Brazilian squad to victory in the World Cup, knocking out Eriksson's England team in the quarter-finals (2-1).
No nation has ever won the European Championship or the World Cup under the tutelage of a foreign manager.
Porto's victory in the Champions League is no indication of strength in the European Championship - Holland in 1988 is the only nation to win both trophies in the same year. PSV won the Champions Cup and the Dutch then won the European Championship.
This match features 2003/2004 club mates squaring up against each other. Luis Figo is set to face his Real Madrid team mate David Beckham. Cristiano Ronaldo could meet his Manchester United colleagues Gary Neville, Paul Scholes and Phil Neville. Finally, Portugal's Hélder Postiga and England's Ledley King both earn their living at Tottenham Hotspur.
This match will take place at Lisbon's Estádio da Luz.
