An educated guess? Had I been that close to a lightning strike, I would have performed multiple bodily functions at the same time.

he probably had it on a tripod, a lightning rod or 2 drove up at the base of the tree, and one of those lightning sensors that plugs into the remote port of the camera and opens the shutter when it detects a flash of light.

I'm not sure what's more impressive, the pic or your apparent expertise at how to get pics of lightening.

I got a good one once just by taking pictures for 30 minutes during a storm on a regular $100 camera. Gotta be real lucky unless you are prepared.

A One In A Million Photo

June 21, 2004

By Scott Sistek

http://www.komotv.com/stories/31809.htm

REDMOND - They say a picture is worth a thousand words. I think this one definitely qualifies.

Marc Laidlaw of Redmond was out taking photographs of last Thursday night's thunderstorm from just behind his sliding glass door on the back of his Eastside home. He got about three great lighting shots, but the fourth one might have been more than he bargained for.

He snapped his camera just as lightning struck a tree in his backyard, capturing nature's awesome power.

He says he didn't know he had captured the shot, saying the strike was so terrifying, he just turn and ran. It wasn't until he went back and looked at his shots that he realized what he had, first thinking he had a daylight photo mixed in there.

You can see a larger version of this photo at this link.

The strike fried some wires in his house, and part of the house is still without power.

It's still amazing to me how the strike was so bright it cast the trees shadows like that. Lucky there wasnt a massive fire too.

You of course realize that the lightning probably hits something... The sound that a lightning makes when it hits bedrock is as loud as a fucking 40mm anti-ship gun.

But about the photo, that's no lightning. It's an alien spacecraft.

Actually its the lightning itself that makes the thunder, it does not need to 'hit' anything.

When it does. It makes a fucking loud noise.. I do know this. I have a cabin at sea on an bedrock island. It gets occasionally struck. The fucking island trembles and the sound is amazing.

Bowling in heaven or air expanding along the lightning bolt.

I woke last night to the sound of thunder
How far off I sat and wondered
Started hummin' a song from nineteen sixty two
Ain't it funny how the night moves
When just don't seem to have as much to lose
Strange how the night moves
With autumn closin in

For fucks sake.. thunder is the sound that lightning makes.. thats why you can tell how close a storm is by measuring the time it takes for you to hear the thunder after seeing the lighting (the difference between the speed of light and the speed of sound)

Ok.. it's a real pic because thats what lightning looks like up close, I've been as close or closer to a lightning strike about 10 years ago with a few friends on a basketball court.. everything literally went white and there was a huge simultaneous crack.. we all subconsciously primitive-brain-reflexedly hit the ground as though it was an explosion. I think it hit one of the basketball court fence poles or one of the trees right next to it..

mdcq had an amazing bit of info on how to catch the lightning shot, but for other people like Namzo, what you need to do is up your exposure time depending on how dark it is.. it's a lot easier to catch it on a 2-8 second exposure than a 1/30th second
(not saying you did this but y'know) I've taken a bit of a hobby in trying to take lightning pics.. im not great at it or anything.. but you get used to the patterns and can usually guess when a "good" time will be to start the exposure.. or maybe i've just been luckier with time - a video camera also helps if you couldn't be assed wating for the perfect shot heh.
