WTF? Carlyle Group Getting Into The Entertainment Biz???

If you know who are the people behind the Carlyle Group this is quite interesting.

Onex Selling Loews Cineplex for $1.46B

TORONTO - A group of U.S. investors have agreed to buy the Loews Cinexplex Entertainment theater chain for $1.46 billion.

Onex Corp. and Oaktree Capital Management, which own Loews, announced plans Monday to sell the world's third-largest cinema chain, with over 200 theaters and 2,200 screens worldwide.

The buyer is a corporation formed by Bain Capital, the Carlyle Group and Spectrum Equity Investors, Toronto-based Onex said.

The assets being acquired include Loews' operations in the U.S., Grupo Cinemex in Mexico, and its 50 percent interests in Megabox Cineplex of Korea and Yelmo Cineplex of Spain.

"Thanks in part to an existing theater portfolio that has been recently upgraded, Loews is well-positioned to capitalize on the industry's steady growth prospects. The investor group will work closely with the talented management team to grow the business," John Connaughton, a Managing Director at Bain Capital, said in a written release.

Onex said its share of the cash proceeds is expected to be about $566 million. In addition, Onex will continue to own units of Cineplex Galaxy, valued at about $77 million, which operates the Loews theater business in Canada as well as Galaxy Entertainment.

Onex is a conglomerate with annual revenue of about $12 billion and assets of $10 billion. Oaktree Capital Management, based in Los Angeles, is a private investment management firm with about $29 billion in assets.

Bain Capital, based in Boston, is a private investment firm with more than $20 billion in assets under management. The Carlyle Group, based in Washington, D.C., is also a private equity firm with more than $18 billion under management. Spectrum Equity Investors has more than $3 billion in capital under management.

Makes sense in many ways actually. A friend of mine is a partner in a small private firm that started a couple of years ago and a member of Carlyle is on their board of advisors.

I don't think most people here understand who the Carlyle group really is. I think they like it that way.

Surprising move nonetheless. It doesn't make sense. And if it does make sense I'm scared of the sense it makes... if that makes any sense to youz guys.

I'll tell you one thing for sure. You won't see any of Michael Moore's films shown in Lowes theaters ever again.

Carlyle Group
The Carlyle Group is a private equity fund, sort of like a invitation-only mutual fund, formed in a 1987 meeting between David Rubenstein and William Conway Jr. at the Carlyle Hotel in Washington. Its assets are around $12 billion, which is actually quite a lot of money to control if you demand profits on it. Those profits thus far have been about 35% per year, very impressive. Carlyle is the 11th largest defense contractor in the United States, and has numerous ventures everywhere -- for instance, a $50M/yr contract training the Saudi Arabia National Guard.
What makes Carlyle a bit different than ordinary funds is that certain people of influence use their extra-fund connections to benefit the greater good of the fund. Foremost among these is Frank Carlucci, and if you wondered why an $11 billion Crusader defense system is still alive after being dis-recommended by the Pentagon, you need only look this far.

Bailed out Euro Disney.

Conspiracy nutjobs see the Carlyle Group as something evil. It's just about money, that's all.

Partners and Former Partners
Bin Laden family (of the Osama bin Laden's) had $2M invested in Carlyle Partners II fund. On 26 Oct 2001, after the 9/11 attacks, this investment was withdrawn.
George HW Bush
George Soros, invested $100M.
James Baker III
Frank Carlucci, former U.S. Secretary of Defense
Arthur Levitt, former SEC chairman
Louis V. Gerstner, ex-CEO IBM, Chairman of the Carlyle Group
John Major, ex-PM of Britain
Fidel Ramos, ex-President, Philippines
Saudi Royal Family

According to some, the Carlyle Group are the guys conspiring behind the scenes to facilitate the black helicopters swooping in to Washington to set up the new world order.

Not by a long shot.

In the past few years, there's about 3 megaplex that opened up. Those new kinds with KFC, Pizza hut and all sorts of goodies inside.

There's one near my place being built right now. Funny thing is the same chain already has an older 7 screen complex only 3 blocks away. They wouldn't bother building them and having them pop up like mushrooms if it wasn't a profitable venture.

Onex is ran by Gerry Schwartz, the same guy who had a failed big to take over Canadian Airlines and Air Canada a few years ago. He also bailed out tons of companies so he knows what he's doing.

Carlyle group is scary. It's the company that conspiracy theorists love to hate. Just google them and you'll see.

No, the movie biz is hurting right now. At least, the megaplex business. Some markets are still viable but unfortunately, thanks to the boom in megaplex chain building in the mid 90's, oversaturation ate away a the per screen profits making it a strange business to want to buy into unless you have some kind of complimentary business to tie in.

Does anyone know if The Carlyle group has an interest in Orville Redenbacher?

The right wing wants to control the entire media. Look at what they have done with radio, newpapers, and TV.

While the mainstream media is pretty well controlled lately, they might have realized in the last few years that they don't have enough control over the movie industry.

The right wing is very good at controlling people through the media, and they are willing to spend as much money as it takes to get the job done.

Yep. This is a very ominous acquisition.

You can't control what movies get made, but you can try to control what movies are seen by the public.

In the future everyone will have their own theaters at home with movies played digitally via an optical connection to the Net.

Yes I do. That's why you'd be even more amazed that they are on the board of advisors for a firm like the one my friend is a partner in.

They have very far flung and far ranging interests.

With 1.50 billion tickets sold annually, 7,500 theaters, and 35,000 screens, the movie exhibition business is a $9 billion industry in the US.

$2 Billion is the gross on popcorn and cokes which have an 85% profit margin.
