Something Smells Fishy
If your lover has complained that you have a fishy smell, there are several possible reasons for this - none of them good. Read on to find out why you should take this seriously and what you can do to smell and taste good.

When I first heard about the movie A Fish Called Wanda I must admit I was rather put-off by the title. Having had an enormous argument with my boyfriend at the time about whether women smell like fish or not - no we don't, damn it - I took the word 'fish' to be a derogatory term for women. I saw the movie anyway (with the next boyfriend) and to this day it is one of my all time favorite comedies.

Too, the phrase: "A woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle." Bothered and confused and befuddled me. I thought, "What are they saying, that a woman is to a fish as a man is to a bicycle?" No, of course not. Fish don't need bicycles and women don't need men. That's all there is to it. At least, that is what I have decided.

But the fish smell associated with women isn't mythical. On occassion, women smell of something other than roses and that can put a damper on your sex life - well, your whole life really. It's difficult to walk tall when you don't feel sexy and impossible to feel sexy if you smell like a fish. The whole fish smell thing would seem to be a physical curse that can only lead to social paranoia - and strangely enough, this 'fishiness' smell is something that hasn't really been researched much and has been openly talked about even less.

The fact is: women who are healthy do NOT smell like fish - and if you do perchance smell of fish, know right here and now that this is NOT something you simply must live with but is in fact a condition you can prevent and even cure. No, your smell doesn't automatically go fishy as you age.

There are a few possible causes for an unpleasant smell. You may be holding your hand in the air, "I know, I know; it's yeast infection! Right?" Wrong. Yeast infections do not create an unpleasant odor at all. You'll find a creamy odorless discharge that messes up your panties and you may feel itchy. Just use those creamy pill things and you'll be fine in a few days. Yeast infections happen when you don't have enough Lactobacilli in your vagina to maintain a pH7. Too much yeast, and your pH soars to very alkaline levels - this is an unbalanced and uncomfortable condition, but easily remedied.

What DOES cause the fishy smell: BV, Trichomonas, Trimethylaminuria (TMA), or a generally poor diet. The first two are curable, the last two involve lifestyle adjustments.

Bacterial Vaginosis, aka BV, aka Gardnerella, aka Vaginitis. It smells, it itches, and like yeast infections it is NOT necessarily transmitted sexually. Virgins can get it too. This is the most common vaginal infection even though most women do not know that it is different from a yeast infection. It can be treated the same way as Trichomonas.

Trichomonas is an STD (Sexually Transmitted Disease) that makes you smell and itch and is really no fun at all. Technically, it's polymastigote parasitic flagellated protozoans. Right now, you're thinking, "Oh my goddess, ICKY. A friggin' parasite! Ack!" Well, that's what I thought. And that's what it is: a parasite with lots of little tails swimming around your precious hahahaha. This disease commonly has company - other STDs like Chlamydia and Gonorrhea. About 75% of all prostitutes have Trichomonas -excreting green smelly goop, while urination and sex become painful.

What you can do against BV and swimming parasites: go see your doctor. You need special medicine and special advice. What NOT to do: never ever douche. It won't do anything against these problems and if you try to douche them away you can end-up much worse, spreading the problem to your entire pelvis. That's a much bigger problem: Pelvis Inflammatory Disease. You don't need that, what with your busy schedule.

The third possible cause is known on the streets as Fish Odor Syndrome (aka TMA aka Trimethylaminuria). Nope, I'm really not kidding. This is a for real malfunction you've inherited from your parents. It isn't always genetic, however. You can get TMA if you've had kidney or liver failure. It is most common in women and it is theorized that sex hormones exacerbate the problem.

What it is: an enzyme deficiency. In your body, your genes are made up of chromosomes and these encode enzymes. Enzymes do all sorts of functions for your body, and the series of enzymes affected by this syndrome are the ones that kill or break down environmental toxins in your body. These are called FMOs, or flavin monooxygenases. They're flavin' monos! FMOs help break down certain foods and certain drugs, so it's important that you have enough of them.

When you don't have enough flavin' Mo (FMO), certain foods and drugs can have averse affects on your body - not to mention the uncomely smell. That smell is caused because your flavin' Mo can't get down and break down a compound called TMO. T-Mo: another DJ that stinks. Actually, it's this compound that makes fish smell the way they do. And you, if your flavin's aren't breaking down TMOs.

There is no cure for fish odor syndrome. But there are things you can do to reduce the smell. Namely, adjust your diet.

Eat a low protein diet - don't eat fish, eggs, beans or organ meats because they have buckets of a certain amino acid called choline. Without enough FMOs, you can't properly break this down - thus, icky smell.
Lecithin is a common food additive found in soybeans, eggs and all sorts of other foods - cut out this additive. Get soybeans and eggs, etc. without lecithin.
Broccoli and other dark greens contain a compound called indole-3-carbinol. This particular compound blocks the breaking-down of TMOs. This is great if you're healthy because it makes the veggies a touch more difficult to digest and that in turn helps clear-out your system. But if you're having problems with TMO smashing already you really don't need indole-3-carbinol in your diet.

It's important to know that if you have fish odor syndrome you may have problems properly breaking down drugs, particularly antidepressants. If you are taking a drug and are experiencing side effects, it's because your body is lacking what it needs to properly break down and make use of that drug.

Even if you do not have fish odor syndrome, you can use this dietary information. Ever notice how people on the Dr. Atkins Diet stink - and that this strange smell permeates the air to such a degree that it stays even after they left the room? It isn't just because they can't have a proper bowel movement and are filling their bodies with toxic material.

People on the Atkins Diet smell awful (in part) because they are loading their systems with so much TMO that their bodies can't produce enough enzymes to break it all down properly. And that also makes them smell sour - from their sweat, their mouth, everywhere. Why? Because even though the liver is a hotbed for enzyme production, every part of the body produces them. Your flavin' Mo (FMOs) are found in midbrain nerve cells, muscles, adrenal glands, lungs, skin, and salivary glands. If you don't eat a properly balanced diet, you will stink - from everywhere and what's worse, you could end up damaging your overtaxed liver in the process. And no amount of soap or perfume will disguise that.

Eat well, be well - take care of yourself. No one wants to smell fishy... except fish, maybe.
