How the fuck is Stephen Harper going to be the next Prime Minister of Canada?

George Bush has about a 15% popularity rating up here, yet the far right evangelical social conservative is leading the Canadian polls? WTF?

I mean by his own word this guy wants to follow Bush into any and every war, spend billions of Canadian dollars on Star Wars, lower taxes for the rich, privatize health care, stop gay marriages, restrict abortions, give longer jail time for non violent crimes including marijuana possession- everything Canada is against. I love seeing Martin squirm and a minority government would be deserved because of the scandal, but I'd like someone to please explain to me why we want Harper as our PM.

I mean, are people looking at the state of the US economy, foreign policy, etc, and saying... let's get ourselves a guy like that.

Big time.

At least Americans had 8 years to forget how horrible these guys lead, then they got caught up in the blowjob and made a mistake. We're watching this type of leadership in the US as we speak, criticizing it constantly, and then choosing the same for ourselves.

God help the world if we have a Bush/Harper dream team running North America.

So, if Harper's the Canuck version of Bush, and Paul Martin is crooked as Dre put it..... then what is the party of choice to vote for.... the NDP?

People are "reactionary voting", and the only likely party on the table that can win against the libs is the conservatives, soon to be known as "Harper's Bizarre"

Martin has build a strong economy during those last 10 years.. building a strong foundation.. paying the debt.. etc... only then will you'll have money to spend progressively on healt, education, cut taxes... Thats the responsible way... Harper is going to mess all that up by giving huge tax breaks.. massive spending on the army... Watch everything go in the shitter in about 4 years... and look at high taxes raises then...

Mulrhoney put us in the hole... Whatch Harper do the same...

tax breaks would be good if it was put to good use. as in R&D, education, tax breaks for export business/investment companies(to bring in foreign money), and things along those lines.

You'll be unlikely to find a politician that isn't crooked. Let's not even talk about the sponsorship funds that has been "misplaced", to the tune of 200 or 250 million?

Sadly, we're better off with a crooked tax evader than with his competition.

I agree that it's reactionary voting, and our choices suck. This is a replay of the 2000 US election. The NDP are the most honest but they'll screw the economy just as badly as the Tories will. 3% tax hike my ass.

I've always hated Martin, and it only escalated when he forced Cretien out early. I don't really think he knew about the sponsorship money, but his CSL tax evasion has always been shady. But with all that negative, he did balance the budget, which is more good than Harper will ever do. We don't need a George Bush sized dept hung on the heads of our children. Plus we certainly don't want Harper entering into a bunch of agreements with the US that will be hard to get out of once he gets forced out in shame two years down the road a la Brian Mulroney.

We're basically choosing between the lesser of two evils, which sucks, but doesn't mean one evil isn't much, much worse than the other. As much as it kills me, I'll be voting for Martin in two weeks.

You know it's bad when Gilles Duceppe starts making sense in the dedates.

Indeed. Any government gets crooked when it's in power for a decade with no serious competition. Let's face it, we've had a 10 year Liberal dictatorship in Canada, we're just lucky Chretien was a nice dictator.

The pot does need to be stirred, and that's why I was thrilled when the idea of a minority government became a possibility. The Liberals need to be kept in check, as does any leading party. However having Harper leading the way is terrifying, I never in a million years thought I'd say this but I'd rather have Mulroney back.

All I can say, dont believe the polls. The mainstream media is so slanted to the left, thats why folks in the US are surprised that a conservative is leading in Canada. I predict a Bush victory....not happy but I know reality.

I guess my vote is going to be for Martin, even with the sponsership scandal. Harper scares the shit out of me his policies are so small minded. I really like Jack the NDP leader as a candidate but just can't vote for the NDP party either.
Tough vote for sure, I don't really feel happy with any of our choices.
Maybe the GREEN PARTY ??

I like a lot of their policies too, but the lame saying is true, a vote for them is a vote for Harper. It's great to make a statement, but right now they have no chance of winning seats. It's like voting for Nader, great in theory but then you end up with George Bush for 4 years. Our only choice right now is Martin or Harper, and I think there's enough of a difference between them make it worthwhile. Image how much better the US would be doing right now if Bush hadn't entered the White House. No Gore wouldn't have been the greatest President of all time, but the country and the world would be better off.

I'd like to see us set up representational government so parties like the Greens could win a couple seats and have a say.

In Canada, it is more often the case that we kick a government out, as opposed to electing a new one on its merits.
