Transparent gif - how to without the rough edges? - GoFuckYourself.com

I can make transparent gifs but when they show up in my page they have rough edges and look pretty crappy.
I have tried alpha transparency and index transparency and i cant it to look good either way.
Ayone know who to do this?

its not too hard, you just use the eraser tool or mask and do it by hand, or try blurring the edges.

The truth is you can't and you never will be able to, not unless someone develops a new type of image format. I know there is some work towards this with the .png format but at this point it still isn't much better than .gif. The only thing you can do is when you are saving your .gif is to set your transparency to the color of the page you will be placing it on, If saved/optimized properly the edges of your .gif will be unnoticable.

There is usually a setting called MATE to specify that color

just put in matte option of your gif
the hex number of the color of bg in the page

PNG format has 256 levels of transparency... which means its _perfect_.

... the only downside is, is that IE doesnt support it.

IE supports it .. just not standard .. you must apply a filter on the image in css .. but yeah PNG is perfect :-)

Interesting, I am familiar with the .png format but I never found much use for it, especially with the file size being considerably higher that a gif and as you mentioned it is not standard and/or recognized by some browsers. Can you explain to me the process you mentioned of applying a filter with css. Because when I did some test image transparencies when it first came into use I still got the nagging jagged lines when applied to various bg colors.
