REMINDER: If you do not use Linux as your primary OS, you are a modern peasant

By that I mean that you wallow in the mediocre technology of the masses, blissfully unaware of the benefits of more advanced technology.

Just like the serfs of medieval times, who tilled the earth, and lived a subsistence existence.

I, on the other hand, am like a feudal lord, enjoying all the creature comforts that my elevated station affords me.

ME
-system has been up for over 6 months
-30 browser windows open (Mozilla)
-8 terminal windows (connecting to 4 servers)
-1 spreadsheet file open (has been open for over 3 months)
-compiling some software (GAIM)
-playing MP3's with lean XMMS
-movie playing in MPlayer
-2 PDF files open
-organized Window Manager (6 windows)
-secure system <---CHECK THIS

YUO
-can't open more than 7 browser windows or machine slows to a crawl
-shitty terminal emulation
-Blue Screens of Death
-bloated slow as shit XP
-worthless Windows Media shitware hangs regularly
-no true multitasking
-bullshit forced integration of programs (like IE and WMA, or IE and Acrobat) is buggy and unreliable
-74 updates required on a fresh install (WTF?)
-only 1 window
-hard to do more than 1 thing at a time because OS will hang or crash
-reboot every three days or those memory leaks will bring machine to grinding halt
-TOTALLY INSECURE

And before you peasants start chiming in with the standard "Windows is good enough - I don't need all that stuff", think about this: THE LORD OF THE MANOR DOESN'T NEED A CASTLE, AND SHITLOADS OF FOOD AND BEER AND HOOKERS, BUT IT SURE BEATS LIVING IN A MUD HUT AND LIVING ON BREAD AND WATER.

are you talking about windows 98????
i have 15 browser windows open right now just to see and everything works fine....
i don't need a terminal, photoshop doesn't run in a terminal
haven't seen a blue screen of death for almost 2 years now
media player works fine for me, no hangs
how can I not multitask? i have 6 programs open right now, each doing it's own thing, and I am working in 3 of them constantly....
i don't allow any programs to be integrated into each other, it fucks shit up
74 updates? i did one update 1 year ago, and it auto updates the rest for me
1 window? what does that mean? I have 4 desktops right now, each is for seperate purposes...i have no idea what 1 window means
as before, i am doing about 6 things right now, INCLUDING editing video and workin in photoshop at the SAME TIME
as for rebooting, i have rebooted in almost 4 weeks...and everything still runs perect

you are uneducated, and I think you just copied this from somewhere

I used Slackware 9.1 for 3-4 months exclusively, while taking university courses.

It's good but not so good that I'd completely switch over. You can't design for shit. You can't make music for shit.
The only thing that it's half-decent for is programming and multi-desktop... not to mention the headaches when something refuses to work and you need to recompile it a few million times.

I went back to Windows once the programming courses were over.

Even though M$ blows, using WinXP is more productive for me in everyday environment.

By the way, to add to that:
My WinXP starts up about as fast as Slackware install (which is even not as bloated as other distros), and after some tweaking my XP works like a charm. The only that that I REALLY miss is multi-desktop

Before shitting on XP try to speed-tweak it.. you'd be amazed with the results... it's pretty stable too if you don't use IE/Outlook/other junk

(but M$ still sucks )

God you are funny.

Do you know how much work I do in a day? Pretty much zero. By your numbers, I could increase that 500x. But 500 x 0 is still 0 so I'd be no better off than I am now.

But you're probably used to working 8 hours a day. Anything more than 15 minutes wipes me out.

linux is the bastard child of true unix variants... a mess of patchwork code and questionable revisions by untrusted sources. stick to a real Unix OS... Irix, Solaris, etc..

linux has more vulnerabilities than windows by far. anyone who says "___ os is more secure than ___ os" is a fucking idiot and should be banned from the internet. an os is only as secure as you make it, some are just more difficult to secure than others. if you want to build new kernels every month to stay secure, go with linux. others may prefer to click the windows update button and reboot.

but i dont know what makes you think you're such hot shit using linux, from what you described it seems all you do is surf the internet listen to mp3s and chat on aim.

As said before, Linux is the bastard child ...
Using FreeBSD for coding purpose and windows for design, sorry, can't live without microsoft these days ... I don't like them, but I'm sure you are also using windows ;-) Even if it was to play some games ... Since most of the guys who are talking about "migrating to linux completely" are just some game freaks who are just installing Linux for fun and game in windows ;-)

First why do you need 30 IE windows open. I only have 2 eyes, and a 21 inch screen...

Second, 6 months uptime, I turn my computer off when I goto sleep, to save electricity.

I'm now on WinXP with 2GB ram, 3.2MHZ 800FSB with HT and

browsing GFY
converting DV tapes into MPG
listening to some mp3's in Itunes
Outlook is open as well

What else do I need?

And no blue screens for at least months, well my desktop is blue, but that doesn't count

Andre

For 5 years I used Linux exclusively. Always booted in text mode.. used WindowMaker as my window manager.. read slashdot and freshmeat obsessively.. purchased my entire wardrobe from think geek.. installed everything from source.. actively tweaked my kernel .. uprgraded the kernel on every minor release.

Then I grew up.

I don't even have Linux installed right now. I don't have time for it. I need Dreamweaver, Internet Explorer and MS Office to do my job. I'm not going to reboot my computer into windows everytime I make a gallery to make sure it works in IE before I submit it.

And, as much as it hurts me to say it, Windows XP is plenty stable. The last time I had a BSOD was when I was working as a sysadmin 2 years ago people still ran Windows 98 and the NT file servers would crash regularly.

And I can run the programs I used most on Linux on Windows. I've got graphic vim as my default text editor. Mozilla as my default web browser etc.

a vulnerability is going to let someone crash or access your computer, how are they not comparable?

and so people who know how to use linux are somehow immune to these kernel bugs that come around every month or so?

If I were using IE I would have 7 browser windows open right now. I've got the GFY forum index and 2 threads open. I've got the TGP admins open for 2 of my TGPs .. just helps me to remember that I've got shit to do later. I don't have to reload them all the time.

However, I've got them all open in tabs in Firefox.

As for other applications .. I've got 2 IE windows open (one to test html and the other has my traffic trade admin for one TGP open because the menus don't work in Firefox). 3 notepads with reminders, passwords etc. Winamp, Photoshop, Dreamweaver, a few SSH consoles, Outlook, XAT Image Optimizer, Thumbs Plus and 5 explorer windows.

Yes I need all of these open.. even Winamp.. the music is keeping me awake .. lol

This is what I miss Linux for. I'm a huge multi tasker and in WindowMaker I could have all these applications tiled on the desktop and use sloppy focus to easily switch from one to the other. It gave me more desktop real estate too.

My win2k machine has been up 13 weeks today..

And doing what I do no unix machine could ever stay up with it.. It costs more than more of your server(S), and will put a flat out spanking on most machines..

I can cut video and clean video at the same time, run photoshop, editors, thumbnailer, shell and ftp programs, compress photos and have more than one desktop, streams music and records it at the same time, and burn a dvd .. Never slows down and doesn't crash.

How? It's all because my dick is bigger!

Outlook is open as well

What else do I need?

And no blue screens for at least months, well my desktop is blue, but that doesn't count

Same here, no problems with XP

They fix it as soon as they are out ... m$ takes 6 months to fix something thats already out

I would love to drop Microsoft, but until you can design shit easier in Linux, that ain't gonna happen.

GIMP is very promising, but will need to go thru at least 6 or seven more releases before it even begins to offer a alternative to Photoshop

With WinXP, I have been running for about 5 weeks now without reboot, and a simple registry tweak allows you to open as many threads as you liek (windows default is set at 15)

Yes Linux is sweet in how little resourses it uses, but it is still in it's infancy, and most of us are not going to even consider switching, until Linux offers equal or better productivity, especially in the graphics/music creation areas.

for anyone who thinks Linux is a safe OS, check out this link...

Evil code found...

a recently found expoit in virtually *every* Linux distribution aside from a couple Gentoo variants, allows crash and subsequent hard lock of a Linux-based machine, server or workstation, and leaves the filesystem dirty, requiring a fsck at reboot.

scary thing about this one is that ROOT ACCESS IS NOT REQUIRED AT ALL. any shell account can execute the code and bring the machine down, glad i don't trust Linux for any of my servers, *BSD or upward only for me..

I had to reboot in February because my ex wanted to use Windows while I was gone for the weekend

Other than that, most of my work is done in terminals anyway. Mozilla rocks, and GIMP is good enough for the simple graphics work I have to do.

have to agree with you on the other software, there is software that can do similar though not as powerful as those you mentioned just yet.

Maybe windows and microsoft do both suck.....sure linux is more stable and blah blah blah blah

But the bottom line is that if microsoft hadn't dumbed down personal computing to point and click then PC's wouldn't be in almost every home and we wouldn't have jobs.

Oh, and as a webmaster there's the design issues also, gotta have photoshop or fireworks at least.

I've never seen such a display of FAGGOTRY in ages! I thought geeks like you with your "my linux is better than your winblowz" attitudes were left to undernet and efnet unix help channels.

Chirst, get out of moms basement and grow a fucking penis.
