Are cheap domain names a good thing?

When I registered my first domain name it was with Network Solutions (the only choice at the time) and it was $100. Now domains can be had for $8-10. Is this a good thing? I mean when they were more expensive people were less willing to buy 10 or 20 of them at a time...it was a bigger investment...so there was a lot less competition on the search engines. What do you guys think?

What would you rather pay? $100 or $10?

I wish I bought more domain back when they were $100 because I could have gotten better ones then. Now most domains are worth about $10 anyway. You get what you pay for.

"A GOOD DOMAIN NAME" is an elusive misnomer.

I will not ever doubt the attributes of the location-location-location marketing viewpoint even when it's applied to the Internet.

You can have a killer domain name. You can have the greatest Bobdamned idea ever. If you don't have a sense of marketing or you don't have the perseverance required, you will not succeed in whatever you do.

The biggest difference between those that succeed and those that fail is that the failers mostly fail to DO anything.

Look at Yahoo. Perhaps arguably, the most visited site on the Internet, Yahoo has a domain name that makes no sense, especially in relevance to "what" it's name means. Yet still, because of ease of use, (not to mention the almighty, precious TIMING factor) good programming and $$$ spent on advertizing, Yahoo remains the # 1 search engine on the infohighway today.

It's time for us $$$ webmasters to start thinking of our medium as like BROADCAST/CABLE/SATELLITE television:

1) We SELL stuff.
2) To get people to buy our stuff, we have to GIVE then something.
3) We have to be diligent and understand that SALES is a numbers game.
4) We must learn how to tease and tempt and tease again.

Everything that was old is new again.

It isn't JUST about your domain name. Sure, your URL can HELP your business to grow but there is soooo much more to it than that.

http://domainnamesystems.com/

this is where I get them.. they are $15 a year.... I have been dealing with htem for over a year anf have yet to have even the first hint of trouble with them. I know there are more that may do it cheaper but I am not familiar with them.

We put in a DNS change with Network Solutions over a month ago and it's still not gone thru... we have a site that is totally down because of this shit. So I guess sometimes less is more huh?

I use domainnamesystems.com - and even though you can get 'em a lil cheaper elsewhere this place has the best customer service that i've run across. I won't register 'em anywhere else...

and regarding the cheap domains issue. If you have money of course it's better for the domains to be cheaper - less competition. with these cheap domains people eat em up like potato chips! but if you are new like me cheap domains are a godsend.

Hmm on alot of the cheap pricing there are a couple things to watch out for. One is that single year catch. Double the price and then compare it to intenic, networksolutions etc pricing!!
One place to shy away from is Oznic.com. They are Aussie based and you can ask just about any host company as to the horrors of dealing with them. They make themselves your admin, contact and tech controllers and its pure hell getting them off. We had to appeal to corenic and networksolutions on 4 domains they held 'hostage' of ours. It came to the point that the hubby booked a flight to do some commando work in Oz. lol Hell we couldn't even transfer the sites to our new host for 3 months!!! They have you in a catch 22 circle jerk with the tech mail to them for host switching.
We've been dealing online since 94 and the one thing you must always do. (Found out ourselves) ALWAYS keep checking back with the registrars and make sure your domain gets transferred into your name. There are ppl out there that take your money and scam you all the time. They aren't even licensed by Corenic to sell domains. 10 bucks can surely add up when times by 500 or 5000 people 'buying' their services. lol
Tam, still owe you a mail but we might be able to help you with that prob. We sort of have alot of experience and some 'ins' in the right places. lol

Oh...and once a month, hit a registrar and make sure someone hasn't stolen your domain registrations. It happens alot more that folks know. Make sure your info is up to date and in your name. It's also best to use your host companies physical address as well. Most hosts will allow that if you talk to them.
