:mad Do Not Buy This Camera

Man Minolta talks a good game... I got suckered in my their hype on their new A2... 8mp... A2 size quality prints... The fucking thin shoots at 72 dpi. What kind of printing can you do with 72 dpi? For web it's fine... but for printing... that requires 150-180 for any kind of quality... 300 dpi for photo printing.

Their customer support is for SHIT too....

I just fucked away1,000.00 on this fucking thing.

Yea... was there... did not see anything on the DPI resolution of the images there or on the minolta site... However... their Z2 states that it will shoot at 150 dpi.

Was a toss up between the nikon coolpix 8700, minolta A2 and the canon rebel D300... shoulda went with the Canon... but wanted 8mp and not 6.1.

Live and learn i guess... Bad thing about buying on line... the company I purchased this from will not take it back because there is nothing wrong with the camera... hey, cannot blame them.... not their fault.

Damn

Sell it on Ebay. And buy a new one with the cash.

Don't keep it if you're not satisfied.

Sad thing is... I do like the camera... has some nice features... the anit-shake is GREAT...

Needed it for some print work for my mainstream business.... Oh well... it will work well for web stuff... Will try to play with these images in PS... but sometimes changing the dpi in PS does not always give the expected results.

Canon makes a real nice 8mp Digital SLR... liek 5k... and an even nicer 11mp for 7k will get that one day

I am pissed because I cannot use it for what I bought it for. I NEED something that will produce "print quality" images. 72dpi IS NOT print quality.... so yes... in that respect I fucked away 1k. I already have a decent web camera.... I need one for print.

Get it?

You must be doing something wrong..

http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/p...s=19&c=us&l=en

"The DiMAGE A2 from Minolta lets you create refined, high quality digital images. The camera's 2/3-type CCD with 8 MP lets you print 17" x 23? (150-dpi) prints."

http://www.fotosense.co.uk/konicaminolta_a2_offers.html

"8-megapixel interlace scan CCD captures superb-quality, detail-rich images-good enough to be enlarged and printed out up to A3-size at 200 dpi."

You can print 17" X 23" images at 150 dpi! It can even print at 200 DPI for A3 size pages.

WTF? Are you trying to print? Movie posters?

Umm,

why don't you shoot on RAW (tiff file maybe?)

and drop the images into a 300dpi PSD...

not that it'll help, but still...

if you shoot on the highest setting possible, there is your print quality.

1000 bucks?

Hmm, D70 or Digital Rebel for a few bucks more coulda saved you major headache.

Ok.. when you snap a pic... pull it into the computer and open it in PS... the dpi is 72, no matter what settings I use... Raw...TIFF... etc....

I have been on the phone with Minolta and I am waiting for the tier 2 level support to get out of a meeting to see what they suggest.

I have a nikon coolpix 4500... images "out of the camera".... 300dpi (4mp)... borrowed a canon D60 from a friend... out of the camera.... 180 dpi (6.3mp)

Size does not matter... If you know anything about print work... you need a min of 150 dpi for regular print... and 300dpi for photographic printing.

YEa... should have gone with the Canon Digital Rebel... Had a kit for like 800 on line somwhere... but wanted a higher mp... Sometimes... bigger is not always better... The Canon D60 I was using takes just as good pic as this 8mp does.

Live and learn i guess.

Then you might need a RAW conversion program to get the images correctly off the camera. See Photoshop CS RAW converter.

It just sounds like there is a step missing somewhere.

I hope so... but minolta has not been very helpful with this so far... guess I will see what the tier 2 support people say. Asked if a new firmware would help... they said no.

Did you know there is a hack for the new canon digital rebel to give it the firmware of the 10D?

I told my buddy about it and got it, I guess he can change his ISO up to ISO3200 and have his focus on lock, which means the focus will lock onto a moving subject, plus a lot of other features..

If I didn't already have a grip of Nikkor lenses, i'd get the rebel.

Yes... the images are those sizes... at 72dpi.... I need at least 150 dpi for print

dpi = Dots per inch... VERY important when doing print... If you do not have a print background and do not know haw a print press works then you will have a hard time understanding this.

I create all my print work at 400dpi.

I know

Thats why i will drop an image into 16bit 300dpi PSD if i feel like the quality might not be too good...

But i mainly shoot for web... so no biggie... until i get the D70 which will have more uses for print.

Are you getting good results with that? I find that sometimes the image comes out a bit distorted....Sometimes...

I get fair results, i'm using a camera thats a few years old. The Fuji S1 Pro. Its a great DSLR... But the MP are small, so if I shoot for print, I gotta crank it all the way up, then to save any quality I can, i drop it into that kinda PSD...

It seems to work, but i'm also not doing anything over 8x10....

Hit me up on ICQ.... 21050142

Hmm good question, in my experience, RAW is always better than anything else...

Because, thats exactly what it is, RAW... no de-compression of the image quality...

Thats why it needs to be handled right when putting it on the computer...

cus a program like photoshop will read it, then convert it...

I think thats whats happening...

Right on... i'm glad that it worked....

There is your missing step...

Its funny, that all these stupid companies are producing cameras that dude amazing work, BUT... do offer software to handle it

Both Fuji, Canon and Nikon offer software to handle their files....

Size DOES matter ... you can just put the DPI higher ... If you print the
640 x 480 image
1280 x 960 image
you can print them both same size but the DPI will be different (you have to set it yourself ... or import the pic in illustrator and reduce it, it still keeps it's original shape for print) .

Many print formats like EPS, CDR and AI do that .

Send me emails at [email protected] if you got questions ...

DPI dosen't matter, you can set it yourself

(Let's say you got a 20 inches picture in 100 dpi resolution, if you set the resolution to 200 DPI it will be only 10 inches).

That is a pretty bold comment...

RAW is 10x better than anything, because its the RAW file....

The best quality in other words....

Why do you think they make programs like CS Raw converter? so you can access that RAW image

dpi = Dots per inch... VERY important when doing print... If you do not have a print background and do not know haw a print press works then you will have a hard time understanding this.
anyway sorry for reading the thread upside down but you can just go in photoshop, image / image size / document size / resolution

You can make a 30 in print image become a 3 in one .

But in optimal ways you should never use photoshop for print ... illustrator or corel draw are definitly the best .

They use the maximum of your image and put it the size you want ... when you do a design . If you only print the photo alone then photoshop is all good . Working in 400 DPI pictures at 25 % can take a long time with a computer that isn't really fast.

Thats why they made Photoshop CS to be more related and friendly to Digital Photographers..

CS vs 7 is total change.

I use both, 7 for graphics and CS for images.

Trust me.

Photoshop is a life saver with CS for digital photographers..

Depending on the project... I use pagemaker fo some things... illustrator for some, quark sometimes... (liek PM better) all based on the clients needs... I do not do the actual printing... I prepare the files and send them off to the client so they can take it to their printer. I just need to make sure that what I send will produce quality outcome. That is what I am being paid for... know what I mean

That is why i like the web work much better... less headaches...

Minolta should have stayed with copiers. Their cameras suck shit, and their scanners suck even worse. Their colors are off, their white balance is screwy... Sorry to hear you got fucked man Next time, go with a Nikon

RAW is usally better than any other format, especially if you load it straight into Photoshop CS at 16 bits.

I would agree the Minolta is a second rate camera, plus as it is not SLR you are stuck with the crappy lens.

IMHO the three best cameras under $5k are the Canon 10D, Canon D300 or Nikon D70. I tried them all and bought the 10D.

More pixels is not better as the bigger ones tend to generate more noise so the effective resolution is actually less than a 6MP SLR, and way less than a 6MP SLR with a good lens affixed.

I was really leaning toward teh Nikon... but have a coolpix 4500 that dies right after the warranty wore off... cost me over 200 to repair... so since that was my 1st experience with a Nikon digital... did not want to take a chance on that happening again.

Will know better next time... live and learn... just an expensive lesson lol
