Many pound dogs are just fine. In fact, the best dogs I've ever had have been pound/shelter dogs.
I agree. I've been that route twice and the best 2 dogs I've ever owned and did excellent with small kids. The first one was a 5 year old mixed hound type and the 2nd was a 7 year old cocker.

I wouldn't recommend a pound dog with a young child. Dogs in the pound usually have some problems that require training out, like being improperly socialized.
That is WAY too broad a statement. Just don't rush into the adoption until you have viisted the dog a few times, had some 1 on 1 time, etc...

Good luck :)

go with the pug. if not jack russells are great dogs

pimpin 06-08-2004 10:35 PM

my pug is almost 1 and he is wound like a top at times and a big time licker but overall he's a damn good dog and pretty obedient for a pug (there often bullheaded).

You might want to consider a pound dog , maybe one that's out of the lick and bite puppy stage already. Yeah puppies are cute but around a young child you should play it safe.

I just had my neice over who is 4 months old and the dog couldnt stop nosing around her and licking her all over the place. She didnt mind but he would not stop. Even though he is small he also likes to jump up on my friends 2 year old as well. Standing on his hind legs he's almost their height and can pretty much knock them over if they aren't surefooted. We have to just hold him when the kids are over.

A medium size dog that won't jump up on the kid might be a good idea. The dog would already be the kids height ya know so it wouldnt need to jump up on them.

A basset hound puppy seems just fine!

pimpin 06-08-2004 10:41 PM

The lady dogs like the tongue

Tam 06-08-2004 10:42 PM

I know you don't want a big dog....... but we have 2 full blooded boxers and a full blooded black lab, and there isn't one of them that wouldn't kill for any one of my kids. They are all aweosme and extremely protective of my kids.

Shephards are also great, I Had one when I was a kid and I thought I'd never own another dog, but I love the ones I have now.

I have pics of them somewhere....... the boxers LOOK mean as all hell, but they are sweethearts with my family. Let anyone come near any one of us though and they are all after them. lol

Disco_Stu 06-08-2004 10:47 PM

I breed dobermans, Fawn color mostly, I never have a problem with my kids riding around on them like their horses.
Upper left is fawn

I did a little bit of research on this when my mom wanted to get a dog. She has a day care at home so she needed a dog that would be good with kids. We ended up getting a Basset hound and they are very sweet. They are a little harder to train but they are definately more passive that most other dogs. We have never had problems with her.
Now that I moved out, I got an American Eskimo named Tatum. We adopted her and she is the coolest dog that I have ever had. She is sweet, playful, harmless and very loyal.

pimplink 06-08-2004 10:48 PM

Can't go wrong with a Labrador...or a G. Retriever for that matter.

believe me, we had both...They were both dead now though.

PiTaAnGeL 06-08-2004 10:50 PM

Tatum is not too big and not too small. She's only weighs 20 lbs. and she stands like a foot and a half tall and is like 3 feet long. She is a miniature American Eskimo.

Easton 06-08-2004 10:52 PM

i'd say a Sheltie

ztik 06-08-2004 10:54 PM

Cocker Spaniels make great pets for children. Small and very friendly.

mandrake 06-09-2004 12:05 AM

Go for a staffy, great with kids, my son is 2 and a bit now and we have had the dog since before he was born. they love each other.
Plus they tend not to bark.
Staffy

Nas7782 06-09-2004 12:16 AM

A staffy would be perfect. If not, adopt a puppy pitbull (pbrc.net). I found pits to be the most loyal dogs in the world.

look through this carefully before picking a dog:

Get a mutt. They usually don't have any genetic diseases.. like hip problems or others.

I agree! Love my Cocker Spaniel. He is really good with all our neices and nephews. Here's some more pics. The camping pics are from when we first brought him home.

Today's Doggie Trivia:

Did you know? Llasa's can be dated back to Tibet, hundreds of years ago? They were used as inner guard dogs at monasteries and palaces because of their intelligence, hearing and natural instincts. Lhasa's are known for their ability to tell friend from foe very quickly!

Would be a good dog for you... that is of course unless the lhasa thinks your kid is his enemy... :winkwink: lol STEP OFF MY PALACE BITCH!

Axzar 06-09-2004 06:45 AM

AHAHAH I just saw the porndollar banner, with Lensmans head as the FCC. Funny stuff.

I'll 2nd the sheltie. (it's my first dog, so what the hell do I know, but it's working out fine).

I just opend up the yellow pages and I saw 10 pages with Lawyers and they all are for personal injory. "Dog bites"

how would I deal with something like that?

Axzar 06-09-2004 11:18 AM

If your dog bites my dog, can I sue you for all your marbles?

Lucy 06-09-2004 11:24 AM

I have a little poodle and I wouldn't change for anything else, he is so great dog to us:thumbsup

Ross 06-09-2004 11:28 AM

I just got me a pet Labrador :)

Sly_RJ 06-09-2004 11:37 AM

Labs are the best kind of dog. Period.

hollywood 06-09-2004 11:50 AM

Heart worms is something easily prevented if you actually knew how to care for your current dog.

You should concern yourself with taking care of the family you have now and not adding more to the list in my honest opinion.

I am reading between the lines here and did not read this thread, but if you are letting your current dog die because of a heart worm problem, I think its ridiculous for you to adopt another one without serious change and commitment to your animal's health on your part.

Lauren 06-09-2004 11:56 AM

pug is not advisable for a house with a young child. pick either labrador or golden retriever. they are best for youngsters and has no temper. unlike other dogs, who just snaps when irritated.

:winkwink:

or if you want something handy, get a toy manchester. very protective and playful. you'll enjoy the company of that dog. :winkwink:

true.

the best family dog with little kids around might be something like a golden retriever---these are docile animals by nature, yet still protective.

but you say you wanted a small dog, and sometimes smaller is not so good for a family type dog.

steer clear of cocker spaniels, or any highly bred temperemtal types.

Mr. Marks 06-09-2004 06:57 PM

retrievers are great with kids. females know when they are playing with a kid so they treat human babied like their own.:thumbsup

Screaming 06-09-2004 07:00 PM

spaniel, lab, jack russell, terrier

Jeff aka NIGHTfall 06-09-2004 07:02 PM

Pugs are the best fucking dogs man, such a great personality.

i have a pug now and i had a pug (passed away) before the current one, they are great!

What?

You are an idiot. I don't own that dog. It's the parents dog of my g/f. I have never owned a dog.

and Two, they are all already gone.

But you can find breaders around. Make sure the mom and the dad are both pure breeds.

Breeders are totally evil, they treat dogs like cattle, and pure breeds are inbred and ill-tempered in many cases. Best thing to do is get a little mutt puppy from the pound.

Sneezy 06-09-2004 08:58 PM

I got some bad luck with a golden retriever. It bit my son right under his eye. 7 stiches it took to close the gap. The scar still reminds us of that mishapp.

the golden is now with a couple without kids and is doing great.

we got ourselves 2 yellow lab sisters. Each and everyday they proof to us how great they are as the number one family dogs.

my advise; take a lab (or beter take 2)
