The ironic part we went straight to mainstream after we shut down the phone sex stuff and made more money with that.

About 2 years later we revived the phone sex lines but with softer content.

No. At the time there weren't laws on the books regulating telephonic transmission of so called sexually obscene audio.

I inquired with attorneys before I started in phone sex on a nationwide basis and the lawyers basically said take it to the limit and see what happens. There's nothing on the books they can really nail you on directly and they'll probably just try to put you in a corner and try to shut you down.

And that's what they did.

After that under Ed Meese they enacted revised laws covering phone transmission of obscene material.
