Any Subaru Outback owners/experts?

Our Golf is failing and in need of replacement by summers end. We spent most of today looking at cars. We seem to be leaning more towards a Subaru Outback. There is a handful of them for sale in the dealership's used car section.

Most are 1997-1999 models.

What are the pros and cons of this vehicle?

I have read a review sites with many reviews on it about them. it's half/half good/bad. Most common problem seems to be oil leaks and blown gaskets. I realize that most people only search for places to review cars if they are pissed about their own, So the positive cases may actualy outweigh the negative ones.

We are looking to put no more than 10k into a vehicle and it must be a functional vehicle for a new baby comming. Don't want a gaz guzler nor one that is expensive to repair.

We have one and love it ! Never had one problem at all. We live in a ski town so we had to have a reliable 4x4 and the Subaru Outback is pretty close to awesome. When we trade this one in, we'll get another to take it's place. Goes great up mountains too and it's kick ass off road or on the snow and ice.

I was looking at a 97 today.

What scares me is that if a head gasket goes like it has for a lot of people.. Major bill to replace them fuckers.

How's the acceleration on them? Do ya really gotta punch it? Or did you get a 6 cyl model?

Got no choice but to get a better car. This VW of ours is not looking good man. The bitch blows a lot of smoke when ya start it the first time each day. Idles like it's going to stall in the mornings and for the first 10 mins of driving it has NO power. Literaly pedal to the metal does fuck all. Once it hits 30kph though it goes on like it has 12000000 horsepower and kicks dirt everywhere.

Not a very safe car for a starting family and our winters are nasty harsh on cars. I forsee this thing not starting some morning.

The subaru outback has the highest safety rating of any car tested in Australia and that includes volvo,BMW and Mercedes.

I wonder if there is any differences in quality and workmanship in the american to australian manufactured models.

Get a jeep.... the new unlimited is real nice and roomy... but for a family... i would suggest the grand cherokee. I have an 02 wrangler sport... love it and would have nothing else... (unless it was a second... third... fourth... etc... )

Too pricey for me. Besides, it's a Dodge. We all know how reliable dodges are.

Out of every car dealership I visited today, it was the only one that has a seperate building for repairs and the parking lot for it which is a good 150 spaces FULL waiting for repairs. I quickly left

I wish Jeep would have stayed in AMC's hands...

Where I live, a 00 GOlf runs about 18k.

Since VW moved their production to Brazil they have been far from safe. Read up on throttle locking, shatteirng drivers side windows and warping heads while driving ...

i love my outback. i have a 2000 with 90k miles on it(do a lot of driving...) and the best thing is it drives like an SUV but you never feel like you are going to flip over. Plus, because the windows aren't in a frame the car is so fucking quiet on the highway...

I would definately recommend the outback. I've had mine for 4 years, I take pretty good care of it and it should last me many more years.

Nice of them to do that for her. not many would. most would milk the cash cow until it ran dry.
