SEO ?? concerning H1, H2 tags, etc

If any of the header tags are redefined using CSS, will search engines notice that and not give "credit" for keywords in Hx tags?

I suppose the same question could go for strong, emphasis, etc, as well.

I work heavily on a mainstream site... used CSS to scale back the H1 tags so I could use them more liberally - definitely helped in Google.

So, to the best of my knowledge, Google doesn't analyze style sheets in relation the Hx tags. I import sheets rather than have them inline within the page, but I doubt it would matter either way.

Positioning with CSS (Cascading Style Sheet) gives a web designer and search engine optimizer terrific design flexibility as well as optimization advantages. That's because, when used properly, you can use it to get more text indexed on a product page without sacrificing layout preferences and design aesthetics.

Esbee and Baddog - thanks for the answers. I've wanted to do that for a couple days but couldn't find any references to the details online..

My understanding is that the major SEs presently ignore CSS, so you should still get a boost from the H1 etc tags. However, any effort to present one layout for humans and another for SEs could be interpreted as spamming if you copped a manual inspection.
