just get the speed your MB will support.
"More RAM" is better than "faster ram"

512 DDR is enough for me. Unless you're gonna use it to render/edit movies or play games I don't think you'll need more.Comment

The best ram? The 1G Corsair DDR 400 or 466MHZ (depending on the motherboard). But I don't think you would notice a huge difference even if you used standard RAM.Originally posted by DarkJedi

Corsairs are nice... they have built on heatsinks... instead of just the bare sticks. i have a pair in my home PC..
with RAM .. the general guideline is:
1) Low latency is better
2) speed depends on your MotherBoard
you'll most likely have to buy 2 identical sticks since most newer MBs are dual channel... (2 x 512 = 1GB)
Memory speed and latency is key in extreme situations.. like if you were to Overclock your PC or something... otherwise just get a lot of what your MotherBoard can support =)Comment

if interested in overclocking, it is important and it does make a difference.
even if you're not overclocking, some mobos do better with particular brands of ram.
then you get into the whole EEC / non-EEC thing. one is not always better than the other, it depends on what you're using the machine for. (and what your mobo supports)
it's kindof like dual-proccessors, but for memory. (i don't know if that's an accurate technical example but it's a decent analogy) it allows your memory to multi-task. most good modern motherboards will have 4 slots, and you will want at least 2 sticks, that usually should be placed in slot 1&3 or 2&4 to take advantage of the dual-channel mode.Originally posted by DarkJedi
