Far too many translations and handwritten copies have resulted in garbled texts, I am pretty certain. "us/they/we" has different translations in different languages, and slightly different connotations.

The virgin debate is a whole other animal. In the original texts, the Greek or whatever it was used the word for "young", which can ALSO be translated as "virginal", but isn't neccessarily so. But that would just crumble the entire Catholic Church, so they aren't going to change it now.
