Paul Martin vs. George Bush

According to the latest Zogby poll, Paul Martin has a 26% approval rating in Canada. Hell, according to a poll conducted a few weeks ago, just a little less than that - 24% of Canadians - have a favorable view of George Bush. (Yes, a little different).

So what's the deal? Why don't Canadians approve of Paul Martin?

???

Bush is a great destabalizing force in the world, and he controls 40% of the world's WMD.

Why should we not have an opinion about him?

Paul martin is getting the fallout of the Cretien Government. He was long time the prince in waiting , but The former Prime Minister just wouldnt retire. Now all the sins of the former gov are resting on his shoulder. he is a successful businessman, so he might be OK to run the country, but no one trusts him because of their Liberal Party excesses in the past. To add to that the Liberals in Power in Ontario Just Fucked everyone, with a bunch of new taxes and user fees that they said they wouldnt do. This all reflects Badly on the National Liberal Party. They have been in power for umpteen years, Time for a change, they may squeek back in with a minority government, but I hope not

I have a question. Can the Canadian Prime Minister stay in power as long he wants? Does anything ever force the hand of the Canadian Prime Minister to call an election?

Basically, Paul Martin is a fucking douchebag. To use an 80s-ism.

No one voted for him.. or the Liberals since he took over.

I bet we see the new PC party take over again.

You are being way to kind to Paul Martin. He is a crook. You honestly think that Jean Chretien's ministers were unaware of the corruption going on, let alone the FINANCE minister?!? The Liberal government got caught helping itself to the mounds of dough they collect, and Paul Martin has been a senior member of the Liberal government for 10+ years. He knew what was going on - he was a part of it - he could have spoke up about it and hopefully stopped it but he didn't. Those are the facts.

Parliament must be dissolved and an election called within 5 years of the last election (or is it 4?) or when the ruling party loses a vote of confidence in Parliament, whichever comes first. I think.

If I remember from high school history, Canadian PM's have to call and election every so often, not quite sure what the exact time period is though.

True.

But there are some facts and one can draw some logical conclusions from them... It simply is not plausible that Paul Martin had no inkling of what was going on. Surely he wondered why Alfonso Gagliano was being shipped off to Denmark as ambassador in 2002, and I'm sure he discussed it with fellow party members. And yet he claims he had no idea that anything corrupt was happening in his party until the Fraser report of January 2004?!? That is simply not credible. He logically knew something sinister was happening and approved of it by his silence and participation within the Liberal Party of Canada. He could have been the whistleblower but he chose not to be. He put his career and party's fortunes, ahead of the nation's interests; the definition of a corrupt politician. He belongs in a jail cell along with Chretien - I'm serious.

They need to make Ralph Klein the Prime Minister. He'd put on his shitkicking boots and whip this country into shape just like he did the province of Alberta. And he did it two years sooner than he said he would, too. The country could use someone like him in power for a few years for sure.

Paul Martin is a liar. We all know politicians are liars but his communication skills are really bad.

Telling everyone with a straight face that he was not involved in the Sponsorship scandal or at least that he didn't know what was going on was so fucking pathetic.

As much as I hate corrupt Liberals I hate bible-thumping Conservatives even more.

I am voting Libertarian (http://www.libertarian.ca/) - porn-friendly, socially-liberal, and fiscally-conservative. Look for "(Libertarian Party)" after the candidates' names on the ballot for your Libertarian candidate.

It's hard to see Harper as a serious challenger. He whines about everything, including these new commercials about the tax rate, saying "we dont' have a country like the US, so we can't have tax rates like the US". He says that is anti-USA.

How is that anti-american? I think that the new Conservatives would have a chance if they had a decent leader - I really dislike Harper, they could have chosen a better leader - Clement or even Stronach (sp?). Bernard Lord even!

I am Liberally minded btw.

You wouldn't believe it if I told you, but here goes...

The current Government of Canada (Liberals) pays to have ads placed across a particular region of the country which is demographically crucial to Liberals in the next election. The ads don't really promote anything at all - they are just feel-good "Oh Canada", "Thank goodness we aren't American" type of ads. All these ads are placed through advertising agencies that are owned by Liberal Party of Canada members, who then kick back portions of the payments to the party in the form of political donations (where they actually get 140% tax credits for each 100% donation - so they get ALL the money they donate back again anyway!). To milk it even more the advertising agencies overcharge the goverment on the order of tens of thousands of percent higher than the normal rates. Like charging $100k for a three page report on which newspapers to place ads. To hide it all, senior civil servants and key figures in Crown Corporations (overwhelmingly Liberal patronage appointees or loyal Liberal Party members) route the money through various government agencies and crown corporations using phony invoices.

It's like a giant make-work project, but where the work is only given to friends of the ruling party in a particular region of the country and no work is actually done. Sort of an evil perversion of Roosevelt's New Deal.

Hard to believe but true.

Even more bizarre is that the party that did this will be re-elected by Canadians in 6 weeks.

people know what paul martin is all about. controlling spending and putting out conservative budgets so that the books are balanced every year. then putting the remainder towards debt reduction.

changing imo would be stupid. with a government if it isn't broke don't fix it

about the scandal, it is possible martin didn't know about it. he sets an overal budget, other organizations decide what to do with the money they are alloted. its just too many things for someone to know exactly whats going on with every single organization. in this situation the people involved did what they could to hide what was going on.

he should have taken a much harder stance and just booted out people. there are a lot of connections to martin in those companies, but if they were in with liberals, chances are they are also in with martin. so its hard to say if martin actually knew what was going on, but procedures apparently weren't followed like they should have been. it was brought up to people below martin, but did martin know about it? thats the sticking point.

So when do Canadians get a vote in US elections?

Paul Martim is not getting much air time on US television. A large precentage of Americans couldn't even name the current Vice President here or their own senators let alone the PM of Canada.

I don't have a point, this is just a whore post.
