I moved.... no secret, everyone knows this....... but now have to resort back to dialup connection. I have looked into dsl, isdn, and about everything else I can get my hands on to look at........

What is best and what should I know about these other options?

Also, if I have to stick with dialup til the Fall as I am told I might, is there a way to put both mine and my hubby's pcs on the same dialup connection at the same time and how would I do this?

God, dumbass is just pouring all over me today huh?

Both pcs are running Windows 98. Both also have ethernet cards, if this makes any damn difference........ I also have a hub I bought when we had cable access........

I have all but begged my cable company to get on the ball with cable, BUT they have more of a demand for Digital Cable now so they are putting off cable access til they get digital cable in.......

Where there is a will, there is a way? Well I have all the will I will need...... I HATE this dialup shit, the least I can do is try and put him online so he can help me until I get something better.

As far as I know all you gots to do is set both computers up the same way to use the same dial up number, you know through the dial-up connection wizard from the "dial-up connection" icon/folder in your "my computer" icon on your desktop.

Wow, been awhile since I have used a dialup connection.

Tam,

If your running win98 second edition, you can use one of your pcs as a 'gateway' for connection sharing (win98 manual 'getting started' page 83). You will have to buy a hub and some rj-45 cabling (cabling and hub from radioshack or the like, linksys or netgear are good hubwise). If you do get cable or x-dsl I would suggest investing in a router (single port ~$99 again linksys or netgear). It will act as a firewall and dhcp server (still need a hub etc). As for the type of connection to get it depends on what services are available and what your willing to spend. Ideally s-dsl (systemic dsl) is the best (for us) because both download and upload speeds are the same (unlike cable or a-dsl a = asymmetric). While I don't have access to it I'm told that you pay for the speed you want (in incumbents of 192 kbps). I recall someone on PC saying they paid $100/mo for s-dsl at 768 kbs. a-dsl is good for surfing (dl @ 6-1.544 mbps), but can be a PIA for ul (can be as low as 64 kbps, as high as 640 kbps again bucks and availability). Cable is also asymmetric and it is further complicated buy the number of users on any given node. I'm on a 500 member node with only 23 users. I've seen dl speeds of 2.8 mbps and ul speeds 500 kbps. Unfortunately this is only going to go down if any of my neighbors get connected. Theoretically if all 500 slots were full and on line at the same time dl could drop to 80 kbps and I won't even mention ul speeds (5 kbps). Hope that helps.

If u have 98SE 2000 or Xp u can use Internet connection sharing and jsut pick your modem to share and have the comptuers using the hub/switch to get the conection over the network. Since your machine with the modem will act as a DHCP server and just server up all the other machines on the network. This is the easiest way to do it.

I experienced that when I moved in my house too. I got my new number and there was no dsl in the area, they said I had to wait until the majority of the housing construction in the area was done before they'd come in and hook up DSL for the area. THEN I talked with the cable company and they hooked me up with broadband...

Im not sure if you tried that, but most cable companies have deals on broadband.

We have dsl and love it.

What we did, though, was pay extra and we got a business phone line and business dsl.

That way, we are guaranteed 640 up and 640 down.

I don't know about isdn....

If you have cable, that would also be a good thing.

Just stay away from satellite.
