i was using Ulead for a long time, but I dumped it about a year ago cuz it just seemed like it had too much junk in it and it was really slow.

but its output was pretty good for sure.

nice.... but not the level of 3D I'm talking about.

can you rotate those objects to any spherical angle? Can you animate them using any spherical angle?

photoshop makes pretty images and simulates 3D nicely with shadows and beveling..... but I don't think I would call it a 3D program. (cuz it's not)

Lol i know - but for what i mostly do now - it does the job. I have however worked with 3D Studio ever since version 2.0 (dos version) - so i know my way around 3d too

There is one thing about 3D.

Either you will understand it.
Or you won't, with designers I have seen some take to it like 2nd nature while others just can not grasp it.

I think a big part of a designer either getting 3d or not getting 3d in ANY program is his eye for actual depths. Making the depth of things uniform...

...I would like to try out that Ulead Cool3d. I have heard nice things. Any others I should check out?

Ok and here is another twist (maybe). What do you think about VR 3d website interfaces? I had a program that would make them but it was very buggy and chunky. With the advancement in processors and video card capabilities, do you see these getting big in the near future?

Example: Car Dealership with a "Virtual" showroom where you can go in and see the cars and other products in an accurate 3 dimensional way.

Depends on the level of 3D you hope to achieve. Poser 5.0 for figure animation cant be beat and coupled with photoshop can have some unbelievable results...thus.... www.toxicangel.com for example.

for 3D terrain, backdrops, landscapes, etc..I would say go with bryce 5 for fast and simple, and lightwave, 3D studio, or if you got some bucks to blow, softimage 3D. Again it just depends on the project.

For text there are several options, one is building your own fonts/bitmap fonts and using swift 3d v2. Hope some of these names help ya find what your looking for.

I've tried the trials of 3DSMax, Bryce, Lightwave, Maya, Rhino and Carrara.

Price points aside, I prefered Lightwave because the renders were the most realistic and it was also easy to use, however it was very expensive.

Carrara was actually a little easier to use in my opinion, but the renders were's quite up to Lightwave's standard. Of course, for the price, Carrara does an exceptional job.

I didn't care for the quality of Bryce's renders. They always looked washed out. It was, however, very easy to learn.

Maya was good, but a little harder to use than some of the others.

Rhino was a pretty good beginner type software. Good for modelling but not for rendering.

3DSMax is ridiculously overpriced and not so easy to use. I didn't like it at all.

If price wasn't a factor I'd choose Lightwave. If I was on a limited budget, Carrara would be a good substitute.

I've always wanted to learn more 3D stuff. I've used Bryce a bit & it's really cool.

I haven't learned mostly because I haven't had a project that required it yet.

Studio Max seems to be pretty popular

Anybody ever use Blender?
http://www.blender3d.com/
and how does it compare to the rest?

The only 3d software I have used was SDRC and Catia 5, both for automotive design.

well thank you for that great revelation. This info will come in real handy as I evaluate other 3D software. Glad you shared this.
