Think about it... the greatest fundamental industrial change to the USA occurred when it practiced open migration in the late 1800s.

Maybe if the US opens it's borders and ports again it will experience the same fundamental change that improved it immensely.

The one aspect of immigration that has really suffered since 9/11 has been the approval process for student visas. Engineering, medical, even law schools are now reporting a significant decline in applications from foreign students. A review of immigration to this country for educational purposes is appropriate, but changes need to be made to expedite the process or else we will see a significant decline in the brain power exported here.

How much of that has to do with your population?

How do you think things would change if:

The population of Great Britain increased by 500%
The population of Canada increased by 900%
THe population of Australia increased by 1,500%

At least then we'd all be on a level playing field.

The main reasons I say this is for one thing with the terrorism threat the US faces now having an open border would be very stupid and dangerous. Second, is taxes. Illegal immigrants often don't pay taxes and then send their children to schools, and go to the emergency rooms and free clinics for all their medical needs thereby draining the system with out adding to it. You don't have that problem nearly as much with legal documented immigrants.

The internet has really levelled the playing field in the distribution of information. Prior to the mid 90s though, I would disagree that American press was so diverse. Pockets of America were exposed to widely varying opinions but the majority of America was educated to current affairs but their local newspaper and the three biggies on TV, ABC/CBS/NBC. All you had to do was leave the United States and see even the Toronto Globe or the London Newspapers to see that the majority of American journalism was in fact slanted pro American. I left the United States for a year in the mid 80s and it was a real eyeopener to me how the media really can kill or extend the life of any issue and just how much American journalism is in fact opinion.
