How come Bush always gets a standing ovation?

Just watched a clip of Bush's speach yesterday and at the end the whole audience stands and applauds the guy in unison!

What the fuck? If 60% are against the guy surely a few of the audience would just sit there and not clap him, or at least heckle or boo the guy?

If it was Blair doing the same type of thing he would get some shit from the crowd he was talking to, or at least a few boos when he had finished his speech.

I have noticed this every time Bush does anything. The crowd rise en masse to cheer him. No boos, heckling, nothing, even in the USA parliament. For the land of the free, the desenters seems to be remarkably quiet. Is it against the democratic rules of the US to give your leader a hard time?

it's called RESPECT... ever hear of it?

The Presidency is the most powerful position in the world. People show their respect to the office.

That's fucking rediculous!

The guy is a politician and therefore should be given a hard time for his party's decisions. The opposition are not doing their job if they haven't managaed to get a few guys in there to heckle him and ask questions. Or even make sure they are seen not clapping him and clearly sitting on the hands.

Makes US politics a farce if the president is not answerable to his policies.

why is it ridiculous to show respect to the office of the president?

There are other times for dissent and those usually happen with the rebuttals after the speech.

While we don't always have to agree with the man, we should still repsect the office of the President. It's called "being civilized".

Politicians generally save their regular nastiness for congressional sessions ;-)

If you were representing the opposition, would you really want to be the jackass causing a disturbance? Your constituency would not be pleased...

Well all can say is that US politics are a soft touch.

Tony Blair would never get away with it here. And the office of Prime Minister has been around longer than the US President.

The opposition would never miss the opportunity to have a pop, dig, ask a question that would cause the current government problems. Bush gets an extremely easy ride. Suprised on of those "college girls or boys" that often stand behind him don't point to him and mouth "twat" or "dickhead" whilst looking into the camera. All they seem to be is a bunch of nodding donkeys who clap and cheer every sentence.

I guess US politics are completely alien to European politics. Bush wouldn't last a week in a more open european political society.

It would depend on the majority if they want to give their leaders a hard time or they wanna stand up and applause every word in his damn speech.

Bush was booed just three months ago in Atlanta. As others pointed out, he didn't get "booed" or "heckled" yesterday because he spoke in front of the Army College. That's a carefully selected venue.

In the presidential address a few years ago there were times when only the Republicans stood up.

As far as speaking in front of the British Parliament vs. US Congress those institutions have different cultures that have developed. Every such institution in the world has such differences. You can find criticism of the president from US Senators and Congressmen in the newspapers and news all the time. In the US, it would be perceived as undignified for a Senator to stand up and boo the president. That's just a cultural difference. I don't see that one is better.

As far as Europe having a more "open society". There's immense criticism of Bush (and every other president) in the news, on the newsstands, in books, from senators and congressmen and in people's every day conversations. If you walk into the politics section of any Barnes and Noble or Borders you will find at least a dozen books have already been published which criticize Bush in one way or another.

Many of the news stories that are quoted here on GFY against the current administration originate in the US press.
There's no shortage of it.

As far as Jerry Springer, no one watches you anymore Montel ;-)

1. There is no "USA Parliament". We have the House and the Senate (aka Congress), which (to the best of my knowlege) is governed by Roberts Rules of Order, under which booing, heckling, or otherwise showing disrespect - of ANY speaker - would not be accepted.

2. Many of the President's photo ops are going to occur at fundraisers and other sympathetic events. It's not often (ever?) an incumbent is going to choose to face hardcore opponents. Their time is best spent on middle-leaning, soft voters who can be swayed.

Maybe you should watch more news then. Bush was booed recently in Atlanta, Wolfowitz was booed in Philadelphia, Giuliani was booed at the 9/11 hearing, a little over a year ago there were protests in many US cities with hundreds of thousands of people carrying signs like "No Blood for Oil" and "Bush is Hitler".

"Worse Than Watergate: The Secret Presidency of George W. Bush" is on the New York Times top 10 best sellers list . You can find books with titles such as "Bushwhacked" and "Shrub" prominently displayed in major bookchains.

Is that how you would treat a god?

That is not the issue... Even if Al Gore were president... the same would have happened... it's not about the man... it's about the office.

Consider the venue... US Army War College.

The President is Commander and Chief... Numero Uno. You cannot be a general in the army without first attenmding this school.

It's all about R-E-S-P-E-C-T

True, too bad the news doesn't show those things. As long as the swing states stay sheltered from reality Rove has done his job.

Do you just make this stuff up? All these stories were covered here. Some examples.

The protests were all over the news here and in every media outlet. They were on the front page of every newspaper in the country and the top news story here for a week. Short memory?

The "Bush booed" story was covered in
the Miami Herald (I live in Miami) one of the most circulated newspapers in the country. Do you consider the state I live in, Florida, to be an important swing state?

I saw Wolfowitz booed on TV.

The Giuliani story was covered in the USA Today, the largest circulation newspaper in the US. It was also covered by MSNBC.
