If you are referring to the guy who did encryption in the US and got chucked in jail because he refused to divulge the code to those mucky slimballs in the CIA/FBI??

Yea.. that's why we now have two encryption standards - one for the US (which the goverment can break) and the other for the free world, the code of which has fuck all to do with the US government.

Hardly surprising he had some funds for his support!

If it is the story about the same guy - who knows? *g* - it is an old story. This happened a while back - the US did not like the idea of encryption and just locked the guy up till he gave em the code. It has nothing to do with "users".

It was resolved when he agreed to give a code version for use within the US - the other version is stuck in a Swiss bank and I think the author no longer lives in US jurisdiction.

Na.. it's not illegal! Just another example of "democracy in action"

MysteryMan, you are wrong there are algorithms that have not been cracked. There is a number of competitions that offer cash rewards for cracking differant companies security techniques. Some are still open as well that have yet to be cracked.

Yes the US makes people give up the keys to a lot of thier encryption algorithms. not really a paranoia thing, just plain simple truth.
