Depends what you are interested in - there are lots of good career fields in the AF (which is why I chose it). Stay away from any service type fields or civil engineering (unless you like that sort of shit)

My buddy did air traffic control for the AF and then got a fat paying job after 5 years i think it was.

I don't know if that's exciting tho. If it's anything like that movie "Pushing Tin," i bet it'd alright.

High suicide rate tho for air traffic controllers.

My son is graduating from BMT a week from today He went in open electronics, but his top AFSC picks are:

2E2X1 - ELECTRONIC COMPUTER AND SWITCHING SYSTEMS

4A2X1 - BIOMEDICAL EQUIPMENT

2E0X1 - GROUND RADAR SYSTEMS

He'll find out in a few days what he got.

I THINK you have to wait more than a year to try for OTS, but I could be wrong. Right now the AF is WAY over recruitment goals and I know it's even harder to get into OTS.

If you have any questions, feel free to email me at peaches at onlinebeach dot com. I probably know more about the AF and some good sites than I need to know

Alot of it is personal choice, what do you WANT to do?
If you have the apptitude (according to your ASVAB scores) and are interested get into electronics. Electricity and electronics is something you'll always use even after you forget ohms law...

Go for Intelligence.

They got the best chow halls.

It was Electronic Security Command when I was in but now it is known as Air Force Intelligence Command.

I'll second that!

Mind you I speak this knowledge only as a contractor, not former military...

Seriously take more than a week to decide what you want to do in the armed forces, my fellow contractor friends said given a choice of doing it all over again, they would have still stayed with the various intelligence fields, but a number of them wished they went in the Navy over the Air Force or Army.

If your heart is set on the U.S.A.F. and want a job that has a civilian counterpart, seriously look into the intelligence positions that will make big bank if and when you leave the Air Force. Below is one field that will be growing as long as there are people using computers!

A number of my cohorts that went the USAF route did this.
1N4X1 - NETWORK INTELLIGENCE ANALYSIS

Performs detailed analysis to reveal target network communications nodes, structures, operating procedures, and mediums for additional exploitation. Recovers, correlates, and fuses technical, geographical, and operational intelligence information.

Recognizes and exploits intelligence information. Authors time-sensitive intelligence reports in accordance with established guidelines for U.S. warfighters and national decision makers. Produces, analyzes, studies, researches, fuses, and correlates intelligence for strategic, operational, and tactical customers. Provides target geopolitical and operational intelligence to national agencies and military command authorities. Identifies and disseminates real-time threat warning information.

Develops and employs techniques to identify and exploit target network configurations and operating characteristics. Reconstructs target communication profiles through in-depth analysis of message address information and routing indicators. Creates and maintains technical and operational databases using diverse computer hardware and software applications. Operates mission-essential communications mediums.

Produces and presents topical high-interest technical and operational intelligence briefings to all levels of command. Uses all source intelligence information. Prepares target communications assessments, adversary order of battle studies, situation reports, and other intelligence reports are required.

Conducts Information Operations, provides analysis for Information Warfare activities and support to Air Operations Centers and supported commanders. Provides detailed support to the contingency and deliberate planning process.

The Air Force is the only branch of the armed forces that prefers to send it's officers into combat.
