7 Month old left in car by father pronounced dead

http://www.app.com/app/story/0,21625,967817,00.html

Ok how the hell does one forget their own kid in a car?

LAKEWOOD -- A 25-year-old father has been charged with child endangerment after his 7-month-old son was found dead in the back seat of his car yesterday. The man apparently forgot the infant was secured in a car seat, and the boy was been left in the car for at least four hours, police said.

Aryeh L. Katzman of Harrison Drive was taken to police headquarters and had posted $100,000 bail by 7 p.m. yesterday, Detective Capt. Robert Lawson said. He is charged with second-degree child endangerment, Executive Assistant Ocean County Prosecutor Robert A. Gasser said.

The charge carries a maximum prison term of 10 years.

Lawson said Katzman had placed his son, Chaim, in the car at their home early yesterday and apparently forgot about him and drove to his rabbinical school, Beth Medrash Govoha. The father apparently attended classes and realized the baby was in the car only when he arrived at the baby sitter's to pick the boy up several hours later, Lawson said.

Lawson said police were called to the baby sitter's home on Powderhorn Drive about 2:15 p.m. and found the boy in the back seat of a Toyota Camry with its windows closed. The infant was pronounced dead by a doctor who works with the Hatzolah First Aid Squad, Lawson said.

The body had several heat blisters, Lawson said. The temperature in Lakewood was in the mid- to high 60s, said Jim Poirier, National Weather Service meteorologist.

Police spent about two hours examining the car and interviewing neighbors.

There was no answer at the Katzmans' modest ranch home, where the family had a fenced-in backyard pool and unmowed grass two feet high.

Neighbors said the baby was the couple's only child and that Aryeh Katzman and his wife, Malky, had kept to themselves since moving in about a year ago.

"I just feel grief for the family," said Terrence Joyner, 34, who lives across the street from the Katzmans. "It must be hard to lose a child. Then again, too, how do you leave a 7-month-old unattended? It's just an unfortunate thing that happened. I don't know how they left the child."

News of the infant's death also shocked and saddened community members who didn't know the Katzmans.

"It's the rarest thing you'll ever find," said Yakov Williams, 29, of Lakewood. "People care about their children in this community more than in any community you'll ever find."

this happens every year..and I honestly can't undestand why.

It's not like you don't have to hear about it on the news when one of these dumbshits do this...it's not like every summer the local news doesn't run stories on how to avoid dangerous heat etc.

These are people who clearly should not have children in the first place..and honestly I think it's some sort of deep seeded thing where secretly they wanted to get rid of them.

How the fuck do you forget your baby in a hot car for over 4 hours? And to say 'oops, I forgot", that's bs. What the hell is wrong with people? It disgusts me!

Here in Vegas I was coming out of one of the local casinos after dinner with my family and we noticed some small children sitting in a car.

Of course all the windows were rolled up, I think the oldest might have been 7 maybe 8.

I went straight to security and they came and got the children to open the doors and then next thing you know here comes the mom.

She claimed she was only running in for a minute..but here in Vegas it's easy for your car to get up to 140+ temps and quickly.

No matter how quick you're going to be you shouldn't even consider this. What if something happened while you're inside.

You slipped and fell knocked yourself out and no one knows about the kids in the car until it's too late.

That is crazy, I didn't let my kid out of my sight when he was little and I would never even leave him in the car seat while I paid for petrol, it may have only been 20 paces away but no fucking way! He's 6 now and we live on a farm and I'm more relaxed in that as long as we're in distance where I know exactly where he is and we can hear each other at all times it's OK

Are you a parent?????

For the first 3 years of my sons life I knew where he was for every second, there is NO way in hell that I could 'accidentally' leave him ANYWHERE, not even in his cot, a good parent will always know where a baby is, I have zero sympathy for this idiot murderer.

I have to say I don't think it's sad, I think it's vile and disgraceful - Tom I know you love your kids and you would NEVER do this to them, I can't imagine being the paramedic rolling up to a scene like this I would go ape-shit

I busted a guy once for leaving his kid in the car and he just could not comprehend that he did anything wrong and wanted to get pissed at me until I threatened to call Metro on his ass.

The sad thing is that it is not even a felony in Nevada as far as I know. They have been trying to pass a law for two years to make it one. If you are a politician how the fuck could you vote AGAINST making this a law???

I have no compassion at all for parents who do this and I personally think it is something genetic that is missing in people like this and they should never be allowed to become parents.

http://kidsandcars.org/ was on the news here in Vegas yesterday and they are giving away heat shields with warnings on them I think on Saturday at Fashion Show Mall. I will be picking up a couple and will make a point of leaving it on my windshield when I am parked in a lot to reinforce the idea.

Yes I am a parent. And I also know exactly how it feels to lose a child (7 month old nonetheless) to someone elses mistake. Compassion is one of those things you can only learn from life lessons. Any one of you could make a mistake to cause the loss of your childs life, don't be so quick to judge.

You lost a baby and you have my utmost sympathy and my very best wishes for a future happy family, I can't imagine the pure hell you must have gone through, any parent loosing a child must be a hellish nightmare - but to 'forget' a baby is trapped in a heat filled car is just unforgivable to me, I can't understand it

Until you are in a situation it is hard to understand. Two years ago my wife (ex now) was driving with our 7 month old in the car and was hit from the side by a truck. She did not have the baby seat adjusted properly and he came out of the seat and was thrown 50 feet from the car and died later that day. Now, if she would have had the seat adjusted properly he probably would be okay and still here. At the time I had the same attitude as you and completely blamed her and it is the reason we are no longer together. The police asked me how I felt about bringing charges against her for child abuse resulting in death and even though a part of me felt like she should pay in some way I told them not to do it. As time went on and I saw how devastated she was over this I came to realize that life isnt perfect and people are not perfect. She has punished herself enough, just as this guy will do.

What a bunch of hypocrites you fuckstains are. I bet each and every single one of you is pro-abortion. So how is this a big deal? If the baby had been killed 7 month earlier right before it popped out its mom's cooch, you'd all be celebrating women's right to choose.

Not that I am anti-abortion or anything -- I am anti-breeding for everyone, unless my permission is granted, but don't be fucking hypocrites.

The police asked me how I felt about bringing charges against her for child abuse resulting in death and even though a part of me felt like she should pay in some way I told them not to do it. As time went on and I saw how devastated she was over this I came to realize that life isnt perfect and people are not perfect. She has punished herself enough, just as this guy will do.

omg thats terrible..children are so precious and fragile...it only takes one little mistake..i am so sorry for your loss..you are remarkable for handling it as well as you seem to be
