GUNMAN CUTS DOWN JEWELER

A federally indicted Diamond District jeweler was executed yesterday in a brazen rush-hour shooting on a Midtown street jampacked with commuters and tourists.

Eduard Nektalov, 46, had just closed up his shop, Roman & Sons Jewelers at 74 W. 47th St., at around 7:20 p.m. when he was approached from behind by an olive-skinned assassin in front of 1212 Sixth Ave.

Without a word of warning, the baby-faced killer coldly pumped two bullets into his back and one in his head, cops said.

"The guy came up behind him and shot him in the head, I think three shots, then the guy ran away," said Matis Zahav, who was standing just feet from the shooting.

Witnesses said the shooter was calm and collected as he tried to fade into the commuter crush, strutting with the gun in his waistband.

GEM DEALER AND FATHER GOT STUNG IN DRUG-$$ RING

May 21, 2004 -- The diamond dealer executed on Sixth Avenue last night was arrested by the feds last year for allegedly laundering Colombian drug money.

Eduard Nektalov, 44, and his father, Roman Nektalov, 74, were busted last June for molding gold into belts, screws and tools so it could be smuggled to Colombian drug lords, officials said.

The gold would either be mixed with other metals or painted over so it could be shipped to South America undetected, officials said.

Officials said they operated the scam out of their West 47th Street storefront, Roman Jewelers ? around the corner from where Nektalov was shot dead.

His distraught father showed up at the scene hours after the shooting, so overwhelmed by emotion that he could hardly breathe.

Both, men who pleaded not guilty to the money-launder charge, were free on $250,000 bond. They were slated to stand trial for money laundering next month. They were not allowed to leave the street without permission from a judge. They were both in court for the case earlier this week, court records show.

Their lawyers couldn't be reached last night.

The Nektalovs were among a group of 11 Diamond District jewelers who were the targets of a 21/2-year investigation called Operation Meltdown.

Investigators from the El Dorado task force ? a special money laundering investigations unit that includes agents from the Internal Revenue Service, Customs, Homeland Security Department and NYPD ? launched the sting operation after getting a tip.

Undercover agents and cooperating witnesses told the jewelers the money they were getting paid for their services came from drug trafficking, and that the gold would be smuggled to Colombia.

The feds said the 11 people who were arrested took more than $1 million in cash for moving over 100 kilograms of gold.

At the time of the arrests, U.S. Attorney James Comey said the jewelers "may not be drug lords, but they're every bit as important to the success of those drug endeavors as the dealers themselves."

New York really is one of the safest places to live. You won't get killed here unless you have it coming. In other places you are more likely to get shot or mugged for nothing. If that was another city 5 other people would have gotten shot since people were within 3 feet of him on all sides.

Criminals here are professionals & have more important things to do with their time than harm bystanders.
