server DNS question

I'm having a lot of trouble with a certain script on my server. The guy that wrote the script blames it on DNS issues with my server and all the different sponsors server for hosted galleries. Which I kinda think is funny being everything was working fine one day, then the next it's all fucked up.

Basically what's happening is my server connection is extremely slow when connecting to other servers through this script.. Long story short I can't scan hosted galleries to add to my sites and I need to fix this issue.

My basic question is, how can I test my connection speed from my server to another server? I'm totally clueless on dedicated servers and unix OS's. I need to find out if it is indeed a DNS issue or if it's something messed up with the script.

BTW the server is running Free BSD, can anyone help?

Check out if your port 113 is open and responding. If its not responding or dropping the requests made to this port, the other side waits for a timeout. Or close the port or put a reject on it, not a drop ...

is there a simple way to check that? I don't know much about free BSD .. but is there a way to check the ping time like you can under windows in msdos?

Actually the way you are describing the issue it could very well be a DNS issue, if previously the script was running fine but is now lagging, it could be that your DNS queries on the domains you are connecting to are timing out. The other possibility is that if the script connects to the script writers server for whatever reason and that connection is lagged or having issues the same problem can result, this occurred for one of my customers and it took a while to convince him that it wasnt a problem with his server.

If you want me to help you trouble shoot it hit me up on icq at 36837470.
