That doesn't mean it's practical, does it? They don't mention how long it takes for an average sized solar panel to create enough energy to create that much hydrogen. You can bet your ass it's not just a few hours.
I mentioned this in another post today. Right now, using hydrogen has no real environmental benefit. On small scale stuff, where you can get 100% power from solar, wind, or hydro energy, then yes, that's great. But not for something like a car, because inevitably, the energy is initially coming from oil, coal, etc. It's a false sense of environmental niceness.
The whole fucking energy production sector must change. But it's great that people are doing the research now so it's all ready to go eventually.
I haven't read much on that site. I think that quote about the hydrogen not being explosive is a little fucking stange. How does it combust, if it's not volatile?
That made for some good reading (just the article not all of your post ). I love this idea. Depending on cost this would be something to do. Ive also seen a group of people that use an oil that cost half the price of gas. This was also when gas was at $1.35. The conversion was on diesal vehicles only. Not only did they double the mpg but it had an increase in horse power. All at a cost of $2000. I dont have the details of this as it was a Discovery special on alternative fuels.
There are plenty of chemical methods for producing hydrogen other than electrolysis. For example, (just from my own chemistry set days growing up) you can combine common lye, water, and aluminum and get a HUGE amount of hydrogen out of it - now we have a use for all those piles of aluminum at the recycling yard.
