OK animal lovers - I found a cat in the middle of the road with a broken neck

Driving home at about 12:30am, I came to a roundabout. Going straight ahead, I saw an object in the middle of the road. As I drove around, I noticed it was a pretty big FAT cat just lying there. I continued... then I thought that I shouldn't leave that in the middle of the road, if a truck comes around in about 5 minutes, there will be guts and blood all over... and it's about 20 metres from an elementary school... and tomorrow is a school day... so I turned my shit around and went back.

I stopped behind it, got out, and went to shuffle it to the side of the road, into the grass. Of course, it was limp. As I was moving it, I saw that it's body wasn't injured, but it's head was a little fucked up... mouth wide open with blood all over... and that it occasionally moved it's paws. Not just twitching, but moving. It had a collar on, but no tag...

Thinking that it was on it's way out and there was nothing that could be done, I left it out of the way at the side of the road and carried on.

Was that the right thing to do... or should I have put it out of it's misery?

Discuss...

you could have called a vet or the animal shelter (they could put it to sleep or it might not even be injured too bad you never know)

2 options IMO.

a) bring it to a vet
b) roll over it's head with your car (if you we're 110% sure he was done)

Taking it to a vet would be the most humane thing to do but I dunno know how many vets would treat a stray cat for free, since the collar had no tag. And I doubt that an animal shelter would have the ability to do much for the animal if it's neck was really broken besides put it to sleep.

And if in fact its injuries werent that severe, moving it out of the road so that it doesnt get flattened gives it some time to recuperate and maybe scurry on along in a few hours, who knows?

Nobody would have looked at it for free, but it could have been put out of its misery. I probably wouldnt have thought twice driving by it though, I would have thought it was already dead and kept on going. I guess your a nicer guy then me.

I am sad. Poor thing sitting out there by himself, to fend for himself and he's injured. Scared and hungry. I would say, wrong thing to do.
Run over the poor guy with your car. Don't leave him out there to suffer.

Now I want to cry!!

take him to the animal shelter. What if that was someones cat who was willing to pay the sergery.

If I got a call from them saying my cat was about to die, I would do surgery for sure. no matter what the cost

I would go nuts if I found out someone smashed my cats head just because they thought he was going to die soon

You should be smart enough to know that when telling such lies, to at least get the story right. Cats with broken necks die almost instantly.

Sure thing, son. As you seem to be the resident orthopedic expert, maybe I should've called you.

I have to agree here. I'm not all for running animals over but that cat is/was most likely terrified as hell and who knows how much pain he/she was in.

I better not tell my husband about this, he'll be so sad. I'm sad now, but no need to ruin his night.

I probably would have taken it to a vet or the Humane Society or something. What if that's some little kid's pet and it dies on the side of the road. They wouldn't even have a chance to say goodbye.

My husband and I found a little dog running down the street with a massive wound on it's haunch back in the Winter. It was in shock and bleeding heavily. We think someone cut him with something on purpose. My husband can't stand dogs but he still felt so sorry for it that he took the time to stop and call the Humane Society to come pick it up. He stayed with the dog until they came to get it, and he gave them our phone number so they could call and keep us updated. Turns out he patched up just fine and he was adopted and they said he probably would have died if we hadn't stopped. Glad he is okay now!

When my ex and I were still together, I saw a puppy in the middle of the road that had been hit by a car and his owner was running up and down the side of the road crying and screaming... begging people to let him out into traffic so he could get the poor thing and not one single person stopped. We were on the wrong side of the road or we would have stopped. I felt so sorry for that puppy, hurt and scared and unable to get to his owner. It was sooooo sad.

I'd say that caring enough to turn around and check on it certainly was step 1 in the right thing to do. Aside from that, who can say?

You stopped for it, which is more than I would have done. Considering you did though, I doubt you would have had the heart to put it out of it's misery.

Anyways, it was obviously fucked. I would have ended it for him asap.

Good on you for at least taking the time and effort to move it. It's never easy to put an animal down, and it's not always really easy to do either. I hit a kangaroo when I was coming down a mountain one day and I had a baseball bat in the boot so I had to end it for him, he was pretty bad, but man, you feel a bit shitty with a bat in your hand on the road with a dead kangaroo underneath. Was the humane thing to do though.

Me too, I can't stand when an animal dies..

I would have either brought it in my car with me and pet it softly and spoke in a soft voice until it passed, or just simply run it over if I could bring myself to doing it This thread really upsets me
