do you have an office in your home?

for those of you that work from home - do you have an actual office type room? I have just always kind of worked where everyone else was but it looks like I am finally going to take over the small (really small) bedroom and make it my office. Going to require a bit of work but I am hoping it will be worth it and I will be able to work on this stuff and my book without people stopping me every two seconds.

Those of you that went from not having an office to having one - did it change your work rates?

Having a TV and fridge in my office (at home, where I site as type now) actually helps me work better.

I have a home office... and an actual office downtown.

This is what i find.

Work longer hours at home since I dont have to drive in and I am able to eat etc. right at the computer.

when I go into the office I find that I only put in an 8 hour day - the cost of travelling / parking / food etc. is way above working from home.

It also is more comfortable and I dont get harassed by people at work.

So why do you still have an office ;)

I know what you mean, I had my own office too few years ago but I prefer sitting behind my pc naked so working at home is great

I wish I had an office

But I usually end up taking my laptop into the spare room and working from there...

This is our dedicated home office. It was a "bonus room" over the garage but Allie and I turned it into our office.

Just a little info I thought I'd share

Direct Expenses:
Direct Expenses are expenses directly related to the conduct of
your business. This category would include office supplies; telephone
service; relevant newspaper and other subscriptions; cellular phones,
beepers and pagers; security alarm monitoring fees; employee
benefits; repairs and upkeep of rooms used exclusively for business
purposes, and professional dues. Direct expenses generally are 100%
deductible.
Indirect Expenses:
Rent, utilities, lawn care and general maintenance (such as
replacing a roof or repainting the exterior of a house), are examples of
Indirect Expenses. The amount of Indirect Expenses you can deduct
depends upon the ?Business Use Percentage? (BUP) of your home.
First of all, the ?P? in BUP applies to a Percentage of what? It
is the finished square footage of your home (i.e., it does not include
such areas as your garage, barn, land, or unfinished basement or attic).
Lets look at an example?
Lets say your home has a Living Room, a Kitchen, a Dining
Room, 3 Bedrooms, a Den and 2 Bathrooms. Now, lets say the
Living Room, Den, Dining Room and one Bedroom Office are all
used in your business ? the Dinning Room and 1 Bedroom exclusively (say 35% of your finished area square footage), and the Den and
Living Room regularly and primarily ? but not exclusively.
Let?s say that in square footage, those rooms make up 65% of
the ?finished? area of your home. Of course, you must have a
restroom if your customers and prospects visit your business, so one
of the bathrooms could also qualify. If so, your total potential usable
square footage is now up to about 70%.
You can include 100% of the square footage of your excusive
use rooms in your BUP, and a reasonable portion of the two rooms
used regularly and primarily for business in this hypothetical example.
Your Business Use Percentage (BUP) would then be between
35% and 70%. That means that ALL indirect expenses are calculated
at that rate. Obviously, you should be sure to consider all of your
business use in order that this percentage can be as high as possible
(pay attention to the upcoming examples for more information).
Imagine that! Legally deducting as much as the majority of
your home heating and cooling bill, your rent (yes, RENT, not just
mortgage interest!), your home maintenance and upkeep costs, even
your lawn care, snow removal, etc.! [ IRS Publication 587 ]

Ive had a dedicated office in my home now for 4 years now and its wonderful to say the least.

No traffic, No parking bullshit, Fridge full of lunch all day and also, the coffee is actually drinkable.

Its all a matter of being dedicated to the space when working and scheduling your time accordingly as if you were at an office for a company. The difference is that you can sit here in whatever you wanna wear that day

I still schedule a lunch hour for errands in the house and outside of the home, usually put in a 10-12 hour day and break off when the wife gets home.

I do.. one of the bedrooms in my house. The biggest bedroom actually.. I spend more time in here then sleeping.

It even has a big lock on the door so I can lock my GF out when I need to get something done without distractions.

yeah, i am going to have a lock on the door too. I have no problem with hubby coming in for a visit but just incase we have guests or the mum in law pops around. I almost want a combination lock so if you don't know the code you have no right being in that room.

I have an office at home too. It's nice to have a room that's just for work! I think it'll definitely be worth it to you after all of the work is done and you have a chance to really settle in and enjoy it.

Speaking as a hahahahahar myself, I think that you'll really like being able to be away from everything/everyone else while you hahahahaha your book. So that alone would make it worth it to me!

Don't you hate when you really get into writing and you're on such a good roll that the words just pour out of you.....and then there's a distraction of some sort which throws you completely off your writing track? Then, try as you may, you just can't get back on it...

Good luck with your new office Hon.

totally WT...I have been working upstairs today because we were suppose to have workermen here today and already I have done more work in 5 hours then I would do in 12 if I was downstairs in the main traffic areas of the house. I even wrote half a chapter! I need to be alone with my brain when I am pouring it out on the page. My writing mind is a scary enough place that I don't need visitors there when it is working.

I have an office office and a work from home office that is getting some additional attention soon as I now have more time to work from home along wtih my Fiancé working there with me

Home office set up like some of those seen in this thread are defineitly worth it if your serious about your business being a business and not a "hobby".
