Steve Vai Solo Australian Tour - July 2004
Yeew!!
Steve and his band will be touring Australia in late July. The tour will kick off in Perth on July 22 and visit Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. Check our Tour Dates page for dates, venues and ticketing info. Tickets go on sale Monday 17 May for Perth, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. Tickets for the Adelaide show go on sale May 18. Non guitarists please ignore this post.

Vai a prick? I don't know about that. He's definitely one strange dude, but when a person thinks and lives on a different plane than everyone else, its easy to get the wrong idea. I met him a few times. Usually he didn't say a word - a few times the guy wouldn't shut up. His mind is in one place - on music. Always. 24/7.
I used to love his playing (and actually have a signed copy of his eight track demo), but the last few years he's just gone too far outside. First time I heard him was on a little floppy single stapled in Guitar Player magazine. Stunning shit. Eat Em & Smile will always be one of my favourite albums - insane playing with Vai and Shehan. His work with Zappa and on the movie Crossroads (not the Brittney Spears movie) was stellar. I started losing interest when he joined Whitesnake (wtf?) but his solo stuff is amazing. Have hours of solos downloaded from Napster. Brilliant man, but on a different planet. |

Beyond that, he's WAY out of my league and I'm not sure its someplace I want to go. Over the last ten years I've settled into a Keith Richards pace and have decided its a very good place to be. The groove is the thing. |

One of the prickish things about Vai was an incedent a few years back when I worked on a video shoot for him, the one with a bunch of kids in a classroom and what not. (I was just a lowly PA)
The shoot had been going all day and into the evening and the kids were tired and some of the parents were getting pissed so he let them take a break. A girl was around the set who was a relative of one of the kids in the video, and she loved Vai. She was a little "slow" and you could tell by her appearance so. When everyone was on break, Steve was just sitting there and the brother of this girl asked him if he could take a picture of him with his sister coz she was a big fan. Vai said sure but make it fast. They stood there and posed, and the brother snapped her little camera, and the flash didn't go off. He said, shoot, lemme try again, the flash didn't go off. Steve said "sorry, you only get one chance" and walked over to a chair and sat down. The girl cried and I thought it was pretty lame. By the end of the shoot everyone hated his guts. I do enjoy his playing though. |
