I just got bad news. Misery loves company.

This is to let you know we had a serious crash on one of our backup
servers. The power supply failed, taking out the IDE controllers and 1 of
the 4 hard drives as a result. Unfortunately, the drive that failed
contained your cam archives, and has been deemed unrecoverable.

Our cams take approx 100,000 pics per day. Those get saved to the server (on the harddrive that failed). I then spend countless hours sorting through them, saving the best ones, and discarding the rest. Then I post my picks to my live site. Because of the sheer volume, I am usually a month or so behind the current date.

It's too much data to store all of it forever, so the drive that failed was sort of temporary buffer space. I still don't know why my host did not back up this drive.

The ones I had saved already are safe. The ones I hadn't gotten to yet are gone.
It's weeks or months of content.. girls having sex, baring breasts, showering, partying, etc and all irreplaceable.

I still have 3+ years of hand picked archives. But it is a huge blow to lose all the more recent stuff.

Not going to name names because they've provided good support and free custom scripting and help with all the really geeky stuff I know nothing about for the last several years... we had unusual needs that provided quite a technical burden. They shouldn't be judged by this disaster.

CamChicks you might want to push back on them to ensure that they REALLY tried every last thing to recover the data on that hd, including sending it out to some experts. There are different degrees of expertise when it comes to disaster data recovery, and there are companies that specialize in the very difficult, but very important recoveries.

It would be a shame if some inexperienced technician who perhaps isn't trying all that hard has deemed the data to be "unrecoverable", when in fact it is recoverable, if in the hands of the top-of-the-line experts. It might be well worth some serious investigating to get that data back.

                            Just a suggestion.

I agree with you there. I watched a television show once that showed a company that specialized in recovering unrecoverable data from hard drives. We are talking melted hard-drives from fires, you name it.they have done it. They have done it for everyone from Spelling to a famous author (forget the name) who's drive was destroyed and an entire book he had just finished was on it....to work for the FBI.

recovery companies are as shady as they come, been through it befoire! If they cant recover it and you mention your gonna have another company look into it, they most often erase it on purpose so they dont look bad.
