:mad Trailers on DVD's - This time they lost it!

Ok, I have seen trailers on DVD movies before, but in the past I have been able to hit the "DVD Menu" button on my remote to skip that junk.

Yesterday I bought and watched "Bruce Almighty" a Unversal Studios movie, and a very funny one too.

On this particular DVD, there are no less than 4 trailers with a total running time of 3 minutes and 45 seconds, which you cannot skip by pressing "DVD Menu" or "Next Track". Note however it is possible to "Fast Forward" through the trailers, and then the time wasted depends on how fast your DVD player can fast forward. As Some players can "only" fast forward at 8 times speed, you would still have to wait about half a minute before you get to the actual "Movie" menu.

Keep in mind that these trailers will show EVERY time you put the disc in your DVD player.

Personally I think Universal Studios have lost their freaking marples, and I plan to send the DVD to them with a note telling them to stick it up their ass.

My curiosity for other peoples opinion on the matter, have made me start a poll on the subject with the question:

Do you think it is alright for movie studios to put non-skippeable trailers on a retail DVD movie?

(Yes like I said it is possible to fast forward though the material, however that is not the same as being able to skip the whole advertising bullshit at the touch of a button)

So everybody please vote in the poll and/or post your comments on the matter.

Thanks and have a great weekend!

Correct you could not skip trailers in VHS movies at the touch of a button, but off course VHS players did not have that function.

it takes like 1 second to get past all that shit... if your dvd player has one of them turbo forward/rewind things... (on mine it's like 200x)

also... most of the time the next chapter button should skip that shit..

No, no that just what I explained in my initial post, you can't skip those 4 previews with any button, expect "Fast Forward" which still sucks.

I've seen this on another DVD, but it was a message about piracy - some guy droning on and on for about 1 1/2 minutes about what piracy does and how to detect it. No matter what button I pressed to try to skip it, the little "ghostbusters" circle with a cross appears.

I purchased the DVD from a legitimate retailer... you do not need to tell me every fucking time that I want to watch the movie why pirating is bad.

BTW I have Bruce Almighty on DVD but I haven't watched it yet. I wonder if the region 4 version has the same issue you do.

I know that with some DVD players there are secret codes you can enter to remove the ability to let a DVD mandate what you can do with your player.

Oh yeah, I have a DVD recorder which has an ad skip feature - pressing the button skips forward 30 seconds. Depending on the show and time of day it aired I can usually press it a consistent number of times and skip the ad break cleanly within about 5-10 seconds.

This function does NOT work with commercial prerecorded DVDs.

That trick with the trailers is done by putting it in the same segment of the DVD as the "FBI WARNING" and other copyright notices. This is a speciial section that does not permit any button presses, etc. You can also set it to loop (so if you hit next chapter or whatever, it takes you back to the start of THAT thing).

It's a mild case of format abuse, in reality... but something they feel they need to do to maximize revenue streams from this product.

I think trailers are cool if you are NOT forced to view them. If they are just there then its fine. But the way Bruce Almighty has it is fucked up.

You expect it on a rental and usually don't mind it - trailer time is "who the fuck nicked my buffalo wings?!" time.

On a purchased DVD it sucks donkey balls.

thats fucking retarded, when you shell out 20-30$ for DVD you should not have to weed thru extra crap and be FORCED to watch it when it can simply be made to FF>>.

What a bunch of lame ass dicks

All the studios seem to be heading into force viewing of trailers.

Guess its payback for all the stolen movies and music over the past few years.

if i wanted to watch commercials i would sit my happy ass in the theater for their 20 minutes before a show.....when i pay 20 bucks for a DVD i want to watch the movie i paid for not have hollywood assholes try to sell me their other bullshit that flopped and they cant sell any other way
