What skills must you have to consider yourself a webmaster?

HTML? Scripting? Design? Marketing?

Do you need to be exceptional in 1, or "in the know" about many? What do you think a webmaster really is?

HTML -- with WYSIWYG editors, not really necessary.

Scripts -- you can get them for free, or pay and have others install them.

Designs -- buy 'em.

Marketing -- for sure a key requirement in order to break through.

Also, you need new ideas, you need patience, you need innovation, you need determination... and much more.

I've been a webmaster in this biz for about 5 years... and i know nothing about scripting. I'd say the other ones are pretty important though, and scripting would be a nice bonus.

I'd say if you're making a living building & operating sites...you're a webmaster.

I'd say any tech skills help but it's the total package.

In the beginning, you either needed html and computer skills or you had to have the funding to hire a staff that had those skills.

We didn't have outsourcing companies and design firms...hell...in the early days it was hard to find a host that would accept adult.

I personally feel one MUST know HTML, and with that, intermediate design should be there. Now, in order to "master" the web, you must have some marketing and networking skills...otherwise you just have a dormant site sitting there.

In regards to scripting, etc... I am competent enough to install scripts if the instructions are there. I can configure them to do what I need and look how I want. However, if I need custom stuff down, I outsource it.

Does this not make me a webmaster? I feel I'm still worthy of being considered a webmaster. I manage my sites, design them (unless it's a paysite or affiliate program), market them and optimize them.

I'm assuming many of you feel the same.

The key skill a webmaster needs is ingenuity. Ingenuity sets you apart from most competitors who sell similar things

Shouldnt the question be "What skills must you have to consider yourself a SUCCESSFUL webmaster?"
All you need to be considered a webmaster is to run a website.

No.. I had the question phrased correctly. If a webmaster has to be successful in your eyes, than that's obviously part of the equation.

Taking that into consideration, what is considered successful?

My webmaster tool box is constantly expanding.. in 1998 when I got started I barely knew how to build an ugly page.

Since then I have taught myself a lot more html code (I do my pages in a text editor)

I've taught myself mid-level photoshop graphics.

I've taught myself linux and webserver management.

I've learnt not only how to get traffic but how to maximize my return on it.

I've learnt not to have all my eggs in one virtual basket. Change is constant in this business.

etc etc..

Unless you are a specialist in one specific thing, like graphics, or coding.. you end up learning a little bit of everything eventually, or you give up.

okay I'll tell you.

1. form your company skills
a. get a s corp
b. get a tax id
2. learn how to take care of your own servers
a. do you really want your shit on some one elses servers?
b. can you keep them up 24/7 365?
c. who do you blame when you can't.
d. how much bandwith do you really have?
e. how to optimize bandwith across mulitple subnets.
f. if you don't know what "e." means your not a webmaster, you're a log in from your local isp at your home/dormroom wanna be trying to make a buck on FHG's.

3. learn php, perl, NT, Linux, unix, and all the other bullshit operating systems and scripting codes. then hahahahaha your own pages.

4. And this is the most important step. once you are a "MASTER" then you must, and i mean "MUST" share it with your podogies to insure the tradition carries on.

Then and only then are you a Master.

Thank you.

You may rise and carry about your business.
